Review
"The stories are well told, rhythmic, and spellbinding, both in English and in the colloquial Spanish. Hayes is a fine translator, and these stories are a testament to his expert execution of this exacting art…An excellent purchase for storytelling librarians or for schools with storytelling clubs." —School Library Journal"The Day it Snowed Tortillas was originally published in English in the 1980s and has sold almost 40,000 copies. Now available in a bilingual edition with new artwork by Antonio L. Castro, this collection's title story tells the tale of a poor woodcutter and his very clever wife." —Críticas"The wide range of stories offers something enjoyable for everyone. The book also exposes readers to both Spanish and English through its integration of the two languages in the text. Overall, the book is enjoyable and fun." —Children's Literature"Like the word tortilla, these folktales with their colorful characters and magical settings maintain a charm that transcends all language barriers…These stories deserve more retellings." —San Antonio Express-News"The stories are well constructed, lean and full of twists and turns…Well worth the price. This book is one of a limited number of dual language stories that I've found. My friend in Guatemala helps me with Spanish, and I help him with English. It works for us to have materials that are set up this way. We prefer dialogue, but conversational books in both languages are even harder to find. "The Day It Snowed Tortillas" has simple folktales that are not too difficult for us as intermediate level learners. While the stories are simple, they are not too childish. If you are trying to learn English or Spanish on your own, then having the translation right on the adjacent page makes understanding easy. However, the book is intended for a "Middle Reader" or "Young Adult," and is not meant as a beginning reader. It's a very good resource.
I had this book when I was just a child myself. I bought it so that I could read it to my daughter. She's probably still a bit young for it, but I really enjoy reading it with her. Since they are mostly latino fokelore stories, they are different from the fairy tales she's typically used to. I think the fact that I remember reading it over 20 years ago speaks volumes.
I use this book to teach English to my Hispanic ESL students. The familiarity and humor in the stories encourages students to read them over and over in both English and Spanish. A great teaching tool, also, for students who want to learn Spanish. I love this book!
I haven't made it through the Spanish translations yet, only the English, but I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the stories. They are clever and well-written, moving along at a good pace and keeping you interested in what's going to happen next. I especially enjoyed the story of the book's title, "The Day it Snowed Tortillas."
I love this book. I love reading in English these tales that are spanish to my son. And we read a little spanish too
I love this book! I have taught in K-12 and this was always my "to go to emergency" book in case of a failed lesson or last minute killing time. Also, as whenever I would period sub, I would take this with me just in case there weren't lesson plans. So many great stories packed into a little book.
Presented with pages facing each other in both Spanish and English, so the reader can follow the text, line by line. Great for speakers of Spanish who are studying English, and vice-versa.
Wonderful book. Please see my review for The Coyote Under the Table.
