I rarely write reviews but felt compelled to write one about this book. It was loaned to me by my therapist. My wife and I have been struggling in our marriage for years and no matter what I do (or she does), we always seem to fall back on the same old patterns of behavior that don't seem to work. Falling out of love has been a very painful experience indeed.The situations described in the book were very, very recognizable to me and at times I felt it described it described me and my own feelings exactly. Read this book, even if it is just for the realization that you are not alone in your struggles to make something out of your marriage.Nobody goes into marriage thinking they are going get divorced some day, but the statistics are grim. Roughly half of all marriages end up in divorce and of the remaining marriages probably 9 out of 10 couples sooner or later end up leading parallel lives where they try to find happiness and fulfillment outside of the relationship with their spouse. That means roughly only 1 in 20 couples end up building a lasting and fulfilling relationship that will last a lifetime. Are we expecting too much of marriage? Few of us would undertake an endeavor knowing there is only a 5% of succeeding, yet we do it anyway.The book goes on to illustrate that we chose our partners for very specific reasons that few of us are even aware of. Out of thousands of potential partners we are attracted to some people that subconsciously meet very specific character and personality traits. In a sense, we all marry into our problems, the very things that attract us to our partners, become the very same issues that drive a wedge between us.The book is very practical too in that offers specific exercises and guidelines for couples on how to interact with each other. But don't expect it to be easygoing by any means. I realize now that marriage takes a lot of hard work and commitment every day to make and stay successful. You have to make it a top priority in your life and take nothing for granted. Expect to do a lot of soul searching, be prepared to relive some gut wrenching and painful experiences from the past, be wiling to learn and undo the conditioned automated responses that you have always used, be prepared to be brutally honest to yourself and your spouse. I fear it might be too late for my own marriage but once you get through this catharsis, I do believe you might actually come out with a happier and more fulfilling relationship on the other end.Regardless, I implore you to read this book. It might help you save your marriage or relationship before it's too late, but even if it does not, it might make you a better person, it will certainly help you build more meaningful relationships with other people and give you a better chance at building lasting and more meaningful future relationships. Initially I was told that this is a great theory. It was suggested by a friend who is a mental health professional. I am very skeptical when it comes to recommendations from friends. What I learned was that my friend was dead on in suggesting the theory. My marriage was in shambles. I thought it had to be all my partners issues. I read the book and applied the lessons. That was 10 years ago. Since that time I have learned to work on me and not necessarily my partner. It helped me understand why I chose my partner and what I needed to do to correct my issues. Since that time, I have bought many copies to give to friends. As a matter of fact, I have lent copies to friends and have had to replace the copy for myself. From what I can see, those who embrace the theory have lasting "normal" relationships. They are much happier.

The best single relationship book I have ever read. I was so impressed by it that I have used it in several classes. Hendrix considers that we fall in love with people who our unconscious minds tell us can help us complete our unfinished business from childhood. He explains why opposites attract -- and why those differences then begin to drive us crazy. By the middle of the book, you are ready to despair--but then he devotes the second half to the solution, the "conscious marriage." He gets very specific, with a couples quiz that can however be taken by one partner alone; suggestions; recommendations; and--exercises. Anyone who puts in even half the requested effort will end up, at the very least, knowing a good deal more about his or her partner.The book is not perfect. Deliberately aimed at a popular audience, the writing is sometimes too simplified. There are links and connections that can be inferred, but that are not spelled out in the book. And HH's optimistic methods are not likely to work for the deeply disturbed or traumatized individual, simply because the degree of change called for is too great.I give this book to every couple I know, straight or gay, who are getting married.

Great book on improving communication to better all of your relationships, romantic, familial, and work. The key points are to listen, truly listen, without judgement; let your partner know you have heard them; and do not let your own ego get in the way of improving or allowing for a positive, open, honest, genuine, meaningful relationship.

This is an incredibly insightful book that is filled with great exercises that work to bring you and your partner together. The only caveat I can see here is for those who are working with a partner with Narcissistic Personality Disorder...it most likely will not work for those couples because the NPD will always have too many needs for the Non-NPD to meet, despite their efforts and the Non-NPD will never get ANY of their needs met, because the NPD views them as an inanimate appliance, not as a living, breathing human or, Heaven forbid, an equal. If your partner is an emotionally healthy, logical, sane person, like most of the population, though, this book will be a tremendous resource for you. It will even help you see what went wrong in your past relationships and increase your own self-awareness. Excellent!

It's a love hate relationship. It gives you the high of what is possible for love, but it also is painfully raw. If you dare yourself to read it, analyze it, and implement it in your own life. I really wanted to like this two-book set, but it's...just...weird.The setup is promising: Imagine a universe in which Dewey does defeat Truman, helping accelerate the fledgling space program; and a good thing too, because a meteor hits the Eastern Seaboard and wipes out virtually all of the government, creating a massive greenhouse effect that will render the planet uninhabitable within decades. Time to colonize space!...but that's about it with the setup, because the series quickly devolves into an Ozzie-and-Harriet "housewife in space" first-person narrative. The author doesn't seem to know what to do with the main character, so she loads the character with all sorts of "character": She's a WASP pilot from WWII (though none of that expertise really shows up once she's in space); oh, and she's Jewish; oh, and a specific Jewish sect; and her husband is absolutely perfect; and they have PG sex virtually every chapter; and she suffers from debilitating anxiety for which the cure is incessant recitation of prime numbers. Bless her heart!Even in alternate-universe world, this character wouldn't be qualified for space. But oh, she make a killer Chocolate Chess Pie when she's in the kitchen of the rocket headed off to Mars!Even this nonsense might warrant a complete read-through if the alternate universe concept wasn't simply abandoned for the Peyton Place narrative. Just one example: The book mentions Eisenhower as a rare survivor after the meteor wipes out millions, including virtually all of the government, in 1952. So, he's alive and kicking. Within three chapters, he's forgotten and never brought up again, even though in our universe, he was a two-term president and with his military chops, he most certainly would have been at the apex of power in the alternate universe. The author was apparently too busy giving us yaw/pitch/roll coordinates every other chapter.Some of the narrative moves the plot forward, and the two-book series ends with the heroine on Mars. And that's it. Lots of blissful ignorance once the author establishes that Earth is doomed; there is no way even in this alternate universe that tiny footholds on the moon and Mars are going to save humanity.Instead, it's mostly a series about how wonderful it would have been if women had been allowed into NASA in the 50s. Kind of a vanity "what if" thought exercise committed to paper in a fiction form. You may find it mildly interesting.

Mary Robinette Kowal pulls off some amazing feats in this, the second half of The Lady Astronaut. For one thing, she's created an enormously sympathetic character who manages to unwittingly alienate most of her acquaintenances through simple and human mistakes. She has also created an alternate history in which, plausibly, humans have established a lunar colony and are launching an expedition to Mars--in 1961. Remarkably, she does this without any hand waving or magical new technology. The members of the Mars expedition are calculating maneuvers by hand!As someone who lived through 1961 (well before Koval was born) I was constantly amazed at her attention to detail, whether it's in Elma York's kitchen, the painfully difficult math, or racial and social tension. It's all seamlessly woven into the story and never trips up the narrative. There were a couple of things that brought me up short, thinking "not in '61" but, yes, you could have a copy of Stranger in a Strange Land on board your ship to Mars.As long-time SF readers, some of us may have become jaded by countless tales of interstellar empires, but The Fated Sky is a reminder that getting into space is hard and it's magical.

This is the continuation of THE CALCULATING STARS. This alternate history space adventure begins in in 1961. Elma is returning from the moon where a small colony has been established when the return ship goes off course and lands in Alabama instead of Kansas. They are invaded by six armed men who hold them hostage because they are angry that scarce resources are being devoted to the space program instead of dealing with problems on Earth that have been caused by the meteor strike some years earlier.Elma is rescued but the incident has long-lasting consequences. Some of the men who hijacked the ship were Black which just highlighted the racial divide that existed in the United States at the time. The racial divide is also apparent in the space program where there are very few who aren't White and those are often given lesser jobs.The main focus of this story is the plan to colonize Mars. Because good publicity is needed and Elma is famous as the Lady Astronaut, she is asked to join this Mars expedition. This is a hard decision for her and her husband Nathaniel in many ways. It will mean another separation and putting off starting a family. The trip will take at least three years. Nathaniel's job as an engineer in the space program means that he will have to remain on Earth. Additionally, adding Elma to the mission one year in means that another astronaut - her friend Helen Carmouche, nee Liu - is being bumped from the mission. Helen is from Taiwan which causes more conflict as the switch makes the mission even less ethnically diverse. Elma faces resentment from her fellow crewmates because she bumped Helen and because she is so far behind in the training. It doesn't help that Stetson Parker is the mission commander. He and Elma have been at odds since they met during World War II.The mission begins and many problems are faced including clogged toilets, an E Coli outbreak on the other ship which kills the ship's doctor, an ammonium leak that forces the crew of Elma's ship to move to the other ship until it is repaired. One of the most enduring problems is that the co-pilot of the second ship is from South Africa and really believes in Apartheid which makes it even more difficult for the Black members of the mission. Then, the mission loses contact with Mission Control on Earth which makes them all feel abandoned and concerned about their loved ones left behind.This was a book that I couldn't put down. Each scene was so suspenseful that I had to keep reading to find out what happened next. The politics on Earth and within the space program had enough detail to make the story very realistic. In fact, many of the newspaper articles the began many chapters were actual articles from papers of the day.

Julian is not so staid, nor Courtenay so dissipated, as either appears at first glance. The romance avoids insta-love, instead developing gradually, in a way that is convincing. The biggest obstacle for the two is communication, which results in causing most of the conflict they must overcome in order to be together.Cat (and her heroes) are cognizant of the dangers of being queer during this era, but it is not lingered over, and "gay angst" is never used as a plot device, either. Using either as such would be lazy writing. Her heroes know who they are and accept it; class differences (in a time and place where social class meant a very great deal), poor communication, and other such things are the basis of their troubles.Both Julian and Courtenay grow a lot on this story - they learn more about themselves, each other, and what it takes to build a relationship that will last. "The Ruin of a Rake" follows the patterns we know and love in Avon historicals, but the lovers both being men adds a new dimension and dynamic to the familiar. The end result is fresh, engaging, touching, delightful... and, of course, wonderfully romantic.

There is just the right amount of angst, especially after the revelation of a regrettable secret. Julian is a moderating influence on Courtenay, and Courtenay helps Julian step outside of his comfort zone. They have great chemistry together, but they have to be very discreet because of the legal ramifications of the era, and Sebastian addresses these issues in a very clever way. Also, I spent a semester in college doing an independent study on gothic novels, so I appreciated the inclusion of an original gothic novel in this book! Oh, and there are tons of cats as well!I would absolutely recommend The Ruin of a Rake. This book is loosely connected to Sebastian’s previous novels, but it functions well as a standalone. That said, if you haven’t read her previous books, you really ought to do yourself a favor and read them either before or after this one. Sebastian is truly a gifted writer with a knack for characterization and redemptive arcs. I am already looking forward to her next book- it’s going to be a long five months!

If you're an F1 snob, this is not for you. It contains one page technical, historical and driver tidbits. It doesn't go into great depth, but you'll learn a few things and enjoy it this light read.

Brother loved it for his collection.

I cool book to have if you're a big F1 fan and a nice coffee table piece; easy read, nice illustrations, some quality insight. However, I don't think it is the "go-to" material for upcoming F1 fans that it was intended to be.

Much like the other books in the Speed Read series, F1 is split into seven sections (chapters) and filled with beautiful matte illustrations and relevant sidebars in each subsection. Also each section also ends in that lovely glossary- which I love even more in the F1 book than I did in the car design book because sometimes racing terminology in F1 is different than I am use to and it helps this NASCAR and NHRA lover figure out what is being discussed. The sections F1 is broken up in order are: Technology, Drivers, Rivalries, Racing Circuits, Flag To Finish, Staying Alive, and Taking Care Of Business. As someone who has watched F1 on multiple occasions or but not closely enough to know all the intricacies this particular form of motorsport, I found this book refreshing as a crash course in the particulars of F1 and what makes it unique in the motorsports world. Much like Car Design, F1 is also written in a clear, easy to read manner. My favorite section in this book was Rivalries, which lists a several of the sports stand-out rivalries. Especially with some of the more historic rivalries, while I likely recognized the name of at least one of the drivers I was able to read through the particulars of what makes that specific rivalry contentious. My second favorite section was the Staying Alive section as it detailed safety and how it has evolved with F1 through the years. I loved this book (and this series) and if you are even just slightly interested in F1 racing, I think you will like this book too as it approaches the series from a NOVICE's approach.

I picked up this book in hopes of learning Chinese myths that were familiar from childhood and more ancient ones that my grandparents and parents did not share with me. I have to agree with other readers that the speech pattern can be difficult to follow at times, even as a bilingual person. I tried reading out loud in order to find the rhythm and calibrate the grammar but I found myself running out of steam. I think this is a book best read in chapters over tea and cakes by yourself. It is not a Mother Goose collection that can be easily shared with a child on your lap. However, it is an okay source to learn the stories so that the reader can retell to someone else in their own voice.

Excellent book. I got it as a thank you gift for a friend's children who are adopted from China. Worked out wonderfully.

Loved this book when I was a child but it didn't hold up well over the years.

This is a good collection of traditional stories with a nice framing story about a Chinese family. This book includes all sorts of classic elements of Chinese folklore like the eight immortals and the Monkey King. It even has stories that highlight some of China's older traditions. A good read for those who like Chinese folk stories.

I like reading fairy tales from different parts of the world. The stories in this book are interesting for children and adults.
