I so enjoyed this book. I have spent much time in the BVI's visited their home on just a short walk from Pussar's . What a life they must have livedwould have looked to have met them.
I bought this book after sailing around the BVI and then seeing the movie (who's name escapes me) that was based on the book. The book is an excellent account of Robb White's life in the BVI, much better than the movie.
I visited Marina Cay several times in the seventies with my parents. This book was in the 'library' that was the original structure on the island built by Rob White. Being 15 and kind of bored stuck on a small island, it was very captivating to read the story of the two newlyweds who escaped reality and built a life and home on the remote island. We stayed in two separate cabins on the far side of the island facing Virgin Gorda. It was difficult to sleep because of the crashing waves and wind. Water pressure was very temperamental as was the temperature. Electricity was also very fluctuating in strength - a problem for a teenage girl addicted to her blow-dryer. Because of these details, I was really able to relate to the story of Rob and Robbie White. I was sad to learn that this precious protected gem of an island was bought by a big company, but that's the way it goes. I was 15 then. Now 58. Still want to go back one time.
The story of a newlywed couple who take up residence in the British Virgin Islands. They are able to buy Marina Cay for a song and live there for 3-5 years, until Robb is called into service during WWII and while their land grant for ownership of the Cay is in dispute so they return to her family plantation in Georgia.
I read this wonderful book as a teenager in the original Readers Digest book. It was a world out of time for me in Hattiesburg MS. I am so glad others are still able to have the delightful experience.
Found a 1953 paperback published by modern library and really enjoyed reading it. Book was stamped as having been sold by the regional exchange (military ?) on Okinawa. Surprised it is so rare. Couple was clever and hardworking. Story was very exciting as they faced some incidents in a very low energy part of the wolrd.
