Review
An enlightening, engaging, and long overdue correction of the falsehood that Washington lacked faith. --Rodney Stark, Baylor University. . . . Dr. Lillback burries the myth that Washington was an unbeliever - at most a "deist" - under an avalanche of facts . . . . --Robert P. George, Princeton UniversitySecular historians ignore George Washington's ward Nelly Custis, who wrote that doubting his Christian faith was as absurd as doubting his patriotism. But they cannot ignore this mountain of evidence suggesting Washington's religion was not Deism, but just the sort of low-church Anglicanism one would expect in an 18th century Virginia gentleman. His "sacred fire" lit America's path toward civil and religious liberty. --Walter A. McDougall, Pulitzer Prize Winning Author

This book is long and is not to be read like a historical biography. It's like reading the Bible. Take your time, read a little each day. Lillback absolutely refutes anyone who claims his book is historically inaccurate or that Washington was not a committed and practicing Christian believer with overwhelming evidence. Almost a quarter of the total pages are footnotes and appendices to support every statement made. Actually I found it spiritually uplifting to read. Yes, it's repetitive, but, to me, that gave it power, and provided solace, and convinced me that this country needs another spiritual awakening. Two of our greatest presidents, Washington and Lincoln, faced as vicious and vociferous attacks as our current President and only their pronounced faith kept them going. None of these men were "perfect", neither was David or any, any of the leaders and prophets of the Bible. To read what Washington went though and how his faith sustained him gives a tremendously hopeful and insightful perspective on our own times. Keep the faith, in God we trust.
Secular history never includes religous beliefs of historical figures unless they are contrarian to normal religion. This book very well documented, footnoted etc goes on to let us all know this great man who would go on to become the Father of our Great Nation'He was a very spiritual man with great love and devotion to God . Please read this book. G.W. was not this cardboard figure you see on History Channel or Military History Channel Documentaries. He was a full man well educated with a deep understanding of his destiny and his relationship with the ALMIGHTY. An outstanding read
This book is a Must Have for anyone who loves history. Other writers systematically omit the faith of any founding father. Very few books about Washington include information on his faith.THIS book gives you everything Washington ever wrote. It includes all original writings. Very comprehensive source on information. And it's a big book, tiny writing. I've used my so much that it's falling apart.
I feel that the author has taken the challenge that those who have written about Washington who claim he was a deist has properly proven on the contrary. I think Mr. Newcombe has properly asserted his position that the man did believed in a God and said prayers to a divine being who was influential in the affairs of mankind. This alone would disprove of him being a desist by definition.
I initially purchased this book on the Kindle store and downloaded to my Smartphone. After some reading, one day saw it at a local store and had to buy the hard copy. It is one of those books I need to physically have. All politicians, school children and people should read this. Excellent book with some actual examples of how and why President George Washington participated and greatly influenced the writing of the US Constitution. He was a believer in God.** He was a Christian
This is what you don't learn in schools! Very good read
History is best learned by reading the thoughts of the people who lived it. This is Geo. Washington's words, what he wrote as he led the Army, as he led our nation, and as he watched a other men followed in his footsteps. To today's readers, unfortunately, this will not be an easy read. The spelling, syntax, grammar are not American-English, but Colonial-English. Think the Declaration of independence, with some Shakespeare added. But, I found it easier if I read it aloud, so I could hear the words. If available, buy an audio version.Still, a great historical record.
Great book on Washington’s faith. This book is very very long though. A bit repetitious in spots but anyone reading on Washington’s faith should have one. It would be intellectual dishonesty to make statements on Washington’s faith without reading this and In the Hands of a Good Providence by Mary Thompson.
