About the Author
After completing a B.S. in geology and a graduate internship in remote sensing, Gary Brackett worked for local contractors while contemplating career choices. Thoroughly enjoying the field work, he took steps to become a self-employed contractor, spending 16 years in residential construction before taking a teaching position in SUNY Delhi's carpentry program. While there, he taught a variety of courses related to residential construction, including light frame construction, advanced framing, finish carpentry, cabinetmaking, millwork, woodcarving, and more. Hired as an instructor, he progressed through the ranks to full professor. Mr. Brackett moved into the Construction Technology and Management program in 2013, where he teaches residential building systems I and II, construction materials, architectural graphics, design-build management, sustainable building practices, building science, residential millwork, and more. He was instrumental in landing a grant from the National Housing Endowment to create a Residential Construction Management track at SUNY Delhi. Gary is often involved in hands-on projects to help students gain practical experience through applied learning, and he is currently designing and building several tiny houses for use in the community. He also holds an M.S. in education from SUNY Oswego, is the author of DEWALT CARPENTRY AND FRAMING, and contributes to other publications.

First of all let me say that I am not a construction pro. I do some side projects from time to time in my own home. I would say that I have moderate skills in construction. This past year I decided to build a fishing cabin on my mountain hideaway..a kind of man-cave. However I did not have a big budget and I had no access to helpers. Therefore I needed a quick reference guide on basic carpentry skills needed to build a basic structure. After doing some research on Amazon, I decided on this book as it was priced well and had received good reviews.I found the chapters in the book to be very relevant to my project as I embarked on building my first ever structure from the ground up, which was a 12 x 16 gable-roof fishing cabin. I especially found this book to be of great use when it came to building the roof. The roof I settled on was a 12:8 pitched gable roof and I was able to do all the cuts and installation by myself, with a little reference to this book.

I am an electrical engineer who has branched off to occasionally design small, efficient rural cottages for independent local carpenter builders. I needed a reference that highlighted basic wood frame construction methods & techniques so that I might ensure that my designs were consistent with good wood frame construction practices. I am pleased with the depth and clarity of the text as well as a convenient appendix with span tables for joists and rafters for common applications. I purchased the Kindle version for my IPAD and Android phone, both have great resolution of pictures when expanded. I recommend this text.
This is an excellent book with clear text, minimizing jargon and explaining jargon as needed. The illustrations are very clear and explanatory. I found the book very helpful to me as a consumer of professional building services, evaluating if builder was providing the features and quality I wanted in my project. I have also found this book helpful in learning how do do some light home improvement projects following accepted techniques and standards.I would like to see DeWalt add a book on finish carpentry to complement this text. There are a lot of tips and techniques for hanging doors and windows and applying trim that would be great to have in one place similar to what this book does for framing.Edited February 2019 to improve grammar and clarity.
Has a lot of good information but nothing that you can't find in other books which are better (complete carpentry or the efficient carpenter for example)
My son is working for a contractor. He is planning to help me build the front back into a building I moved onto my place this winter. He has been able to plan the project using this book.The seller got this to us in time for Christmas along with another book our son wanted for fun reading. The price was reasonable. The package arrived on time and in good condition.
I recommend this book only if you know some carpentry or some of the terminology. Otherwise its a little advanced for brand new users. Great resource though!
very helpful if you are beginner and want to learn the craft
