A quick--but not at all superficial--read that gives you the tools and perspective to harness focused urgency in your life. A quote I particularly like: "The use of rational assumptions until they are proven false is a powerful tool to maintain direction and speed toward your objective." This is the kind of thinking that allows you to get into action almost immediately, without waiting for the full picture to take shape (which it almost never will anyway). In a way it's like the advice aspiring writers often get about getting started writing, which seems simplistic but is actually fundamental: start writing. It doesn't matter if you fumble at first--keep going. Only when you get writing/moving will all the latent ideas and possibilities around you start to take solid form so that you can actually grab hold of them. Until then they're just potential--you might be able to sense them but you can't put them to use. Keiper's book is geared toward helping you take those first steps--including doing some initial assessment of a situation--and then, once underway, adjusting course based on the feedback you get once in motion. It talks about making commitments, getting "first-mover advantage," the intuitive aspects of operating with urgency, and more. Keiper doesn't talk down to the reader, and he acknowledges that some readers may be familiar with some of the material here. But really I found the book uniquely inspiring, not only in content but because of the unique way in which Keiper's own passion and voice come through. For me one of the most inspiring things about the book is its motivational quality--you feel like getting to work after reading this, and more importantly you see how easy it can be to get started.

This book does two things that every good book should do. It gives you a fresh perspective and gives you something to talk about!i was fortunate to do a study of this book with with a couple dozen other folks who were leaders, coaches, speakers, and the one thing we all pulled from this book is the relevancy to living our life with a sense of urgency -- proactive urgency - before the storms hit. Living our life with proactive urgency keeps us focused on the goals and when the storms do hit we are already prepared.The book is broken into two major parts. Section one folks on just what proactive urgency is - why it is valuable. Section two takes the book to the next level -- it gets to the how. How we can live our life with pro urgency. I particularly liked the chapter dealiing with fear. That was worth the read alone.Here are just a few William Keiper quotes from the book that resonated with me.- "Choosing to be urgent ... means embracing ourselves as we are now and moving into action."- "Acting with purposeful urgency requires accepting the risks of doing"- "You are already. Just. Go. This is what successful people know and never forget."- "If you want to know your future, the actions you take now will create it."- "The world only moves for you when you act "

The Power of Urgency is a powerful and thought provoking call to action towards getting what you want. I read it, studied it and then used it as a guide as I put my own system in place towards playing "all out" and saw immediate results. The beauty of the The Power of Urgency is that not only does it kick start you into action, but it also serves to help you get unstuck. It does both by providing great insights into the role that fear, inauthenticity, lack of commitment and not dealing with the truth play in our not having what we want. William's Urgency Rule # 17 states, "Proactive Urgency is personal. If pursued with clarity and commitment, it will transform your work, your life and the lives of those around you". In just ten days with this book, I see great evidence of this.

In the wonderful introduction (written by Steve Chandler) to this book he points out that author William Keiper "has caught lightning in a bottle". I couldn't agree more. This book is like riding a rail at 100 miles an hour. You can't stop and you can't get off and you don't want to. I love the whole idea that we have such amazing power that we only use when we are forced to use it in a crisis, but we can turn it around and be proactive. I will think differently about how I go after the things that are important to me. If you are stuck--buy this book. If you read it you can't stay stuck.

I bought this for my nephew a few Christmases back, and he loved it! He had also gotten a magic set that morning, that he became bored with after a little while, but this Chemistry set held his attention for at least an hour or two. He was 8 at the time, and my husband sat and supervised him and helped him conduct the experiments. The experiments can be a bit messy so they did them on the patio table in the backyard. I think they can also be done in the house, but you should put a tablecloth or newspapers down first for the spills. Most of the ingredients for the experiments can be found around the house, or in the kitchen (i.e. baking soda, hyrdogen peroxide, food coloring, etc.) Because most of ingredients are household items, that means the experiments can be conducted multiple times, if the kids want to see the results again. Makes a great gift, I'd say ages 6+ supervised, they can probably handle the directions on their own with limited supervision by 9 or 10 or so.

This kit is terrific; it's simple, and doesn't try to distract you with a bunch of crappy pieces, just the essentials. My 8 year old daughter is loving this, but one BIG warning; the first experiment is terrific, but the kit DOES NOT warn you that when you electrolyse salt water, you are liberating chlorine gas as well as hydrogen! 2NaCl + 2H2O → Cl2 + H2 + 2NaOH I don't think it is in any significant quantity, but if you get a snorkful of it from the positive gas tube, it will be unpleasant! Also, NaOH is a product (aka caustic soda or lye). You begin this experiment with something nontoxic, and wind up with something that you really don't want your kids poking around in.That said, I love that this kit focuses on actually learning something about chemistry, as compared to most other kits that have you mix X and Y together to get some brightly colored snot-like substance, without much actual educational merit.

I made bad choice. I bought it for my 8 yr old son. But I don't think it is fun. I would call this an experiment instruction book rather than a kit. First, none of them I could start doing right away simply by opening the kit. In order to do any one of them, I would have to go out to look for and buy something unless I skipped one item (e.g. One needed unsalted salt. I think people will not usually have it around in their homes.). I don't mind of using cups, pots, candle, match, or salts, vinegar which we all have in the house. Most in the instructions was "teaching". My kids felt bored when I read those to them (my daughter is turning to 10). They kept asking me do it instead of reading it. They wanted to see actions. But less than half was to take chemistry actions. Most was to "educate" you, not to show you. Younger kids want to see and do but to read and listen. A couple of the "experiments" were to ask kids hold cut out tags from this kit to act as electron running around a proton. From this, you can get an idea on what kind of fun stuff it instructs you to do. I don't call it a chemistry kit. It may be a fine and short book for 6th graders.

I'll admit I gave my rating based on what I expected and that maybe I should have expected something different. This kit has no real experiments but is mostly things like "look how if you put a paper towel in water it absorbs it". None of the experiments were fun but maybe this was meant to just be educational. It does do a good job of explaining what is happening but i think will only be exciting for maybe children 8 and under.

The 7 and 5 yr old grandsons brought this to Grandmas house to do their experiments. We all had fun with the variety of projects although not all materials were included in the kit. But most were easily found in the kitchen. Some experiments we did more than once. The 7 year old was particularly happy because he learned many scientific terms and concepts that were taught a few weeks later in his class so he felt ahead of the game.

I bought this chemistry set for my niece who is more interested in science than in dolls.The directions were clear and easy to understand.There were various experiments to perform leaving little room for boredom.All in All she was very happy she received this gift. Science Wiz makes wonderful kits got imaginative minds.

I first purchased this kit from Borders and now again from Amazon. My daughter at the time was 6 when I first bought the set and she enjoyed it very much. She was glued to this set until everything was used. She is now 8 and is a science fanatic!! I have purchased other sciences kits and the Chemistry plus kit. I am just keeping her interested as she is always speaking of becoming a scientist when she grows up.

I bought this kit for my niece (7 years old) and the Chemistry set for my nephew (9 years old) for Christmas. I also sent them each a remote controlled helicopter. On Christmas Day, my brother called me and told me that he & his kids had been conducting experiments all afternoon, and they loved it. All of those toys that they had been given (including the remote controlled helicopters) remained under the tree, while they bounced from the kitchen to the living room to the back deck conducting experiment after experiment TOGETHER. They were having a blast.The thank you cards that I received from each of them a couple of weeks later thanked me for the Physics & Chemistry sets and told tales of the experiments they had conducted with their parents, with this little addition at the bottom, "The helicopter was nice. Thank you for that, too."I don't have children. But from what I can tell, they like doing fun stuff that amazes them. This Christmas, I'll be sending more science sets...

About the Author

After completing a B.S. in geology and a graduate internship in remote sensing, Gary Brackett worked for local contractors while contemplating career choices. Thoroughly enjoying the field work, he took steps to become a self-employed contractor, spending 16 years in residential construction before taking a teaching position in SUNY Delhi's carpentry program. He was instrumental in landing a grant from the National Housing Endowment to create a Residential Construction Management track at SUNY Delhi. First of all let me say that I am not a construction pro. I do some side projects from time to time in my own home. I would say that I have moderate skills in construction. This past year I decided to build a fishing cabin on my mountain hideaway..a kind of man-cave. However I did not have a big budget and I had no access to helpers. Therefore I needed a quick reference guide on basic carpentry skills needed to build a basic structure. After doing some research on Amazon, I decided on this book as it was priced well and had received good reviews.I found the chapters in the book to be very relevant to my project as I embarked on building my first ever structure from the ground up, which was a 12 x 16 gable-roof fishing cabin. I especially found this book to be of great use when it came to building the roof. The roof I settled on was a 12:8 pitched gable roof and I was able to do all the cuts and installation by myself, with a little reference to this book.

Been framing for 10 years and learned new tricks with this book.

I am an electrical engineer who has branched off to occasionally design small, efficient rural cottages for independent local carpenter builders. I needed a reference that highlighted basic wood frame construction methods & techniques so that I might ensure that my designs were consistent with good wood frame construction practices. I am pleased with the depth and clarity of the text as well as a convenient appendix with span tables for joists and rafters for common applications. I purchased the Kindle version for my IPAD and Android phone, both have great resolution of pictures when expanded. I recommend this text.

This is an excellent book with clear text, minimizing jargon and explaining jargon as needed. The illustrations are very clear and explanatory. I found the book very helpful to me as a consumer of professional building services, evaluating if builder was providing the features and quality I wanted in my project. I have also found this book helpful in learning how do do some light home improvement projects following accepted techniques and standards.I would like to see DeWalt add a book on finish carpentry to complement this text. There are a lot of tips and techniques for hanging doors and windows and applying trim that would be great to have in one place similar to what this book does for framing.Edited February 2019 to improve grammar and clarity.

Has a lot of good information but nothing that you can't find in other books which are better (complete carpentry or the efficient carpenter for example)

My son is working for a contractor. He is planning to help me build the front back into a building I moved onto my place this winter. He has been able to plan the project using this book.The seller got this to us in time for Christmas along with another book our son wanted for fun reading. The price was reasonable. The package arrived on time and in good condition.

I recommend this book only if you know some carpentry or some of the terminology. Otherwise its a little advanced for brand new users. Great resource though!

very helpful if you are beginner and want to learn the craft
