I would say this book is a heavy read and addresses complex arguments and topics, but Gary does a great job at informing us readers about the ways society has been so destructive when it come to handling injustice. He also helps us understand healthy ways to handle injustice. Combating slavery and oppression is definitly a huge need in society and this book calls us to act. If you finish this book with little understand or passion/ desire to help combat this injustice then clearly you didn't read it througly because it is powerful and motivating! This book makes you question the strength and pursuit of your relationship with Jesus and challenges you to seek and ask God the plans he has in store for your life. I also love how he addresses Jesus as the true source of justice. We need to seek his wisdom and council to fight against this injustice while taking practical steps to help this world issue.
I found this book to be very helpful in my questions about God and justice. Often times it is easy to get discouraged at all the terrible things in this world and wonder if God even cares, but Gary Haugen helps shape a perspective about how God is just and how to address the discouragement we face. This book also talks about stopping our inactivity as believers and pursuing justice. Through personal stories about his fight through IJM (International Justice Mission), Haugen brings hope to the injustice we see happening all around us.
This is an excellent book for anyone to gain a basic or deeper understanding of what justice is, why we need to care about justice, and how to make a difference for the lives of individuals around the world in unjust situations.As early as the preface, Haugen shows his heart for justice issues and acknowledges that he is only a small part in the work of justice. He needs you and me and all the people at International Justice Mission and in other helping organizations.Haugen begins with honesty about his feelings and emotions as he began justice ministry, and turns it to a challenge for the reader to step out of American suburbia complacency. He then moves on to found motivations for justice in the Bible, and to poignantly describe the heart of God for the justice of his people.Then he describes the "anatomy of injustice" and explains how oppressors work, and what we can stop them. He gives hundreds of examples throughout the book, mostly of the work of lawyers within IJM to seek out justice for those enslaved to child labor, held captive in brothels, or victims of genocide.I have also read Haugen's "Just Courage," and would describe it as a plea for comfortable suburban Christians to step out and get involved in justice issues. While "Good News" does the same, "Good News" also takes on justice issues at a deeper level and includes more about the biblical basis for justice and more about how you can be involved on a bigger level.Overall, Haugen has much experience in working with justice issues around the world and will grip your heart with stories of oppression and liberation, pleading with you to join the cause. Read this in a room where you can cry, and make sure to read the first chapters carefully so that you will be well-founded in the Word of God and tips about how to circumvent compassion fatigue.
Gary's book is one of hope and tension. Not only does it inspire and call you to respond to the systemic injustice in our world, but he guides you in the response. If anyone were to ever doubt the importance of engaging in a broken world from a Biblical perspective, this book would clarify and correct that faulty thinking. Gary is not only the vision caster for this kind of thinking, but he is actually on the ground working to fight for justice, so the author practices what he preaches. Incredible!
This book is a good call to Christians to see the problems and what needs to be done to help. It is a good wake up call as to what is going on in the world and where people can and should help in order to see the injustice as a way to help. I think that this book brings up good points as to what the way the christen community can join in and help those around us.I think that this book is good for all audiences, as it is a wake up call for those who are looking for ways to jump into the injustice about the world, and how we as Christians can jump into the fight and help.
This book was very informative as to some of the atrocities that are going on around the world. That is nothing new, but the way that we look at it from a Biblical perspective had a huge impact on me. I really liked how they did not just leave us with these horrible injustices and ended the book, but gave us hope in Christ and ways that we can help. I also never knew about IJM and I am fascinated by their relief and how their organization works. This is a great book for those who are fed up with just sitting around and feeling like they cannot make a difference. This book can bring people to action, or calm their hearts knowing that the Lord Jesus Christ has everything in his hands.
As someone who seeks to make an impact on those who are directly affected by trafficking this book was incredibly helpful in my journey towards my goal. The author, the founder of the International Justice Mission, gave me a better perspective on trafficking than all of the numbers and statistics ever could have. So many times have I heard, "There are 35 million slaves in the world today," but hearing the story of a victim impacts you in a way that a thousand statistics never will.
Gary Haugen, and International Justice Mission, are on the front lines fighting the greatest evil of our day - human trafficking. That slavery still exists today, in such sheer magnitude, is unthinkable and intolerable. This book educates and challenges. It invites you to enter into a life of significance, to save other lives, to defend helpless children, to become part of the solution.
