As with the other books in the Alvin Ho series, "Allergic to Camping" is a wonderfully written book about a quirky, sensitive Chinese-American 8-year-old who lives in Concord, MA. In this installment in the series, Alvin's dad decides to take Alvin and his younger sister camping ... and Alvin reacts in his typically neurotic way ... with hilarious results. I've reviewed several other books in this series and I've written in those reviews about how much my Asian-American family appreciates the portrayal of another Asian-American family in a witty, realistic way. These books are terrific for a growing reader and also for a family read-aloud series. We also very much appreciate the beautiful illustrations, which really help the characters come alive. Make sure to consult the glossary in the back of the book for explanations of various concepts/words.
These books would be good for boys and girls. My 2nd grade son and I read this entire series together. Every night we looked forward to learning what predicaments the well-meaning Alvin got himself into. Alvin is smart, sweet, creative, funny and tries to be a gentleman. Alvin is also shy, anxious, and unable to speak in public. My son says,"I like to read Alvin Ho. I think these are good books. I hope there will be more, like books #7, 8, 9 and 10! I think the next book should be 'Alvin Ho:Allergic to history, reading and other big stuff.'"
Good follow up to the first book (Alvin Ho: Allergic to Girls, School, and Other Scary Things) in what I looks like will be a continuing series (Alvin Ho: Allergic to Birthday Parties, Science Projects, and Other Man-made Catastrophes). Made great bedtime reading for my 3rd grade son - fun and interesting, but NOT scary or overly suspenseful. Nice illustrations too. My only complaint is that it was a bit short. The characters are all really engaging and likeable, and it would be nice if the book had run them through their paces in some additional situations to flesh the book out a bit more.
If only there were more Alvin ho books. These are hilarious - even for parents. Especially great for boys that do not often get into a series of books as many are geared towards girls at lower elementary grades.
This was a required reading for my fourth grade daughter. The story was entertaining and my daughter seem to enjoy it.

My 5 year old, soon to be 6, loves Alvin Ho. He can relate to Alvin's fear of things. The color of the writing and the fun, humorous situations that Alvin gets in and imagines are fantastic. We ended up buying the other two books my son liked this one so much. I hope the author keeps writing!
My kids can't wait for the next chapter. I read one chapter a night, 2 if they are being extra attentive.
