From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up—Justyce is an African American teen caught between two worlds. He knows that the education he's receiving at a private school will grant him more economic opportunities, however he begins to question the effects his private school education on his own identity. Some of his classmates believe that the racial pendulum has swung too far, giving African Americans an unfair advantage over their white counterparts. The kids he grew up with believe Justyce has assimilated too much and has forgotten where he came from. He questions his blackness, his relationship with his biracial girlfriend, and his attraction to his white debate partner Sarah Jane. Through a series of journal entries, Justyce attempts to figure out his place in the world by exploring the life of Dr. Martin Luther King. A violent altercation between a retired white police officer and his best friend causes Justyce to examine what it means to be an African American male in 2017. The length and pace of this well-written story make it a perfect read for reluctant and sophisticated readers alike. The main characters are well balanced and will resonate with teens. However, the voice of African American women is largely absent from the narrative. The characterization of Justyce's mother and his girlfriend are one-dimensional compared to some of the other protagonists. Still, this important work should be read alongside Jason Reynolds's and Brendan Kiely's All-American Boys and Kekla Magoon's How It Went Down. VERDICT An good choice for school and public libraries.—Desiree Thomas, Worthington Library, OH

I was a very quiet kid, someone who watched and listened, tried to understand why people were the way they were, made the choices they did—good and bad. To this day, when I happen to see a photo of someone who stood up so faithfully for what they believed in, clinging to the hope that things could improve if they just kept chipping away with their voice and actions, I reflexively place my hand on their image as if it could somehow connect me to them. As if it could somehow tug me closer to understanding how they persevered. As if it could somehow allow them to give me advice on what was stirring in my heart as I watched and listened to the world around me.In this novel, Justyce McAllister—a bright, motivated, top-of-his class student—takes it one step further. As he navigates a contemporary Atlanta where he is still seen more for the color of his skin than the content of his character, he regularly writes to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in a journal, hoping that it will help him put Dr. King’s teachings into practice in order to manage everything that’s thrown at him.I don’t want to give away the exact situations he faces, but I will say this: there is a safety in fiction that allows us to witness and begin to understand the harder stories and truths we flinch from in real life. Books like this get important views considered, get important conversations started. As a white person, I needed to get to know Justyce, for I’ve never been in his shoes, and the fact is that his fictional shoes are worn by millions today. As a mother to white children, I needed to own this book in order to place it into my kids’ hands and ensure the messages inside it are nailed home. Over and over again, until things do get better.I highly recommend this book, and hope it gets into as many hands and hearts as possible.

A lot of discussion points in a small package.Dear Martin follows Justyce who is a black teen boy who goes on a journey of discovering the hardships of being a black male.I must say I am impressed with the many topics this book covers from racial profiling, affirmative action, going along with racist jokes and more. Dear Martin would be a perfect book for a high school class because of the topics it discusses, the engaging story and the short length.Personally, just like The Hate U Give, Dear Martin was hard to read. My children are black and it’s frustrating & heartbreaking to know the issues presented in the book is reality for many black men and for my sons as they get older. The idea that they’ll deal with racism solely because of their skin color guts me and the possibility of someone harming them because of it, I can’t even think about it.Thank you Nic Stone for writing a piece of literature that I hope helps many people see problems of today and revisit how they think.Issues: My main issues with the book were structural. 1. It was short, just over 200 pages. I heard it originally was longer but cut shorter to make it more impactful. I wish there had been a little more development here. 2. The structure and formatting of the book threw me a little. The majority of the book is written in a regular formatting but then randomly dialogue is formatted in a bullet point style. I thought it was a mistake at first. It was interesting but I’m not sure I was sold on it. I did also like the letters written to Dr. King.Overall: This was an important read. Please read it

Okay, so I'm going to get this out of the way first. If you've read DEAR MARTIN, read THE HATE YOU GIVE. If you've read THE HATE YOU GIVE, read DEAR MARTIN. If you recommend THE HATE YOU GIVE, recommend DEAR MARTIN too. These books talk to each other. I'm not going to compare them because that's not what this review is about--I'll leave that to someone else.DEAR MARTIN is a lightning fast read--and it's structurally neat with like almost play-like dialogue exchanges--and it's telling a heartbreaking and important and hard-to-look-away-from story. I love Jus. He's a wonderful character. His mom is so real, and his teacher Doc is awesome. And his friends are people I want to know. No spoilers, but this to say, I wasn't expecting the plot of this book to go the way it did: that is, the novel itself wasn't predictable.Although, yeah, of course, I was expecting it too go where it did--since this book is exactly what's happening in the US right now.All in all, an amazing read that everyone, and I mean everyone should read. But also, the story and characters are so real that there's pleasure in reading this book too.I cannot wait for Nic Stone's next book.

Years ago (20?!) I suffered through a database course (three times, no kidding) at the graduate level and never fully absorbed the data modeling concepts. This book has cured that. I get it. The examples are simple and concise and easy to follow. The concepts are well thought out and accessible to the willing.Currently I have to design systems that include database objects and I can already identify things I will need to improve based on the knowledge found within these pages. If you hang out anywhere near databases then reading Data Modeling, A Beginner's Guide will greatly improve your understanding of your environment.A good value that I am glad I own. I recommend it without reservation. So now let me get back to my data modeling tool to finish my Entity Relationship Diagram for my design, and use what I have learned to fix what I broke.

Usually I prefer the hard copy for technical manuals, but in this rare case I recommend the kindle version because the font in the printed copy is way too small. What that done to save money on paper, or just for the "lulz"?

Needed this textbook for college class, got the correct edition in excellent condition. All Good.

The best book on the subject that I have read. Good coverage of the subject.A balanced view. Most books on the subject tell you that their way is the only way. While he certainely has his preferred methods, he does discuss some alternatives.

Its ok

Good book.

It's a great book to get started on learning about relational database management systems. The author used Microsoft Access to help you see the entity relations as a beginner, which helps you draw a mental picture on how relational database works. I like the author's perspective of "if you were to design a car, you should probably know how to drive one first".

This book is perfect for beginner who wants to learn about data modeling in RDBMS. This book has good TOC and very easy to find what you want to read.Very useful tips like "Ask the Experts" section. Very easy to understand when a book comes with step-by-step section. Good examples to show tables and data relationships.I am new to data modeling in RDBMS but after reading this, I can easily create a small test database with some test data and check out the examples from this book. At the end ...., I say hey..it works!!!

Little Fish: A Memoir From a Different Kind of Year, by Ramsey Beyer

From Booklist

At the beginning of Beyer’s graphic memoir, she is indeed a big fish in a small pond. A thoughtful, sensitive, well-rounded kid from the “tiny, little farm town of Paw-Paw,” Michigan, she spends her time with friends playing hockey, rocking out in her garage band, and practicing her art. But when college rolls around, she embraces change, heads for the big city, and attends art school in Baltimore. Young Ramsey is immediately stricken by the overwhelming amount of work she must complete in her first year while battling her ideological disagreements with the institution of art school, loneliness while growing apart from her Michigan friends, and homesickness. Beyer’s debut captures her introspection with earnest, appealing black-and-white panels, which chronicle her new adventures with display maps and floor plans and provide a welcome visual break from the typewriter print of her online Livejournal lists and blog posts. Wary college-bound students will find comfort in this sincere and endearing look at freshman year. Grades 8-12. --Courtney Jones

Ramsey even shares some of the actual pages from her journal, the lists that she created of things that she wanted to do or would miss while moving away from everyone that she knows. This is a great first hand account of what it's like to leave everything that you know and get out into the real world. It's awkward at times, especially as Ramsey navigates dating for the first time, but why wouldn't it be? She captures everything that we as readers have felt at some point or another in our lifetime. This is such a great way to put together and share a story. Drawings that have an innocence about them, pages from real life journal, type written lists, crumpled pages creating backgrounds...it has it all. There's a lot of visual interests to keep the reader going back for more to see what they missed the first time around, but never feeling overwhelmed by what's there. The one thing that I'm not sure about, and that maybe because it's an egalley, is that there isn't any color anywhere in the book and that's a bit disappointing because just a touch of color in a few places would add some nice contrast. Barring that though, I love looking through this book. This is a perfect book to give to those heading off to college the first time and for those of us that haven't been in college for a while. It's a nice reminder of what it was like to leave home for that first time. I highly recommend this book and I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

I went into this book biased. I had read a few of Ramsey Beyer's zines and her previous book, Year One, so I knew I was going to love this book just as much as all the other quality works Ramsey has done.I was sucked in immediately by the art (which is always on point)and the obsessive list making but the part of the book that I liked most had to be seeing the progression of the relationships Ramsey formed her first year away from home. It was honest and heartfelt, from the excitement of making new friends to the confusion of friendship turning into something you weren't looking for, but were happy to find.I think no matter if you are going to college, just really like auto-bio comics, or just want to read a really rad story about growth and becoming the person you want to be, you are going to love this book.I don't normally write book reviews (as I am sure is totally apparent)but I think this book is really special.

A thoroughly refreshing and entertaining read/view. Raw in parts and refined in others. As an artist myself it gently touched my soul and took me back to my own 'little fish' experiences both inside academia and outside in the big wide world. I loved it for exactly what it is and look forward to Ramsey's next 'opening' into her personal adventures.Ronda Eden

Very relatable story of a girl leaving small town life to go to college. Great for anyone who wants to remember how that time of their life felt, or for anyone who's about to experience it for the first time. The fun comic format with lots of lists is an added bonus!

I am a fan of graphic novels and have read some really good autobiographical ones, so I was looking forward to Ramsey Beyer's debut. Honestly, it fell flat for me.The premise: Ramsey is a small town girl finally heading to the big city, to pursue her dreams of being an artist... and, unsurprisingly, she feels ambivalent about it. We get to go along for the ride as she recounts her experience first hand. The problem: Beyer may know her stuff as an artist, but she's not there yet as a writer. She did too much telling, when she had the perfect format to do more showing. (The occasional list is an interesting touch, but too many ruin the possibility of good story-telling). She repeated information over and over whens she should have been moving the story forward. And whenever she got an interesting narrative arc going, she would abruptly shut it down by inserting a random list. One of the biggest problems Beyer admits to facing in the book is her problem with getting close to people... and that seems to have translated to the written page. How do you write a memoir while holding back? The answer: not entirely satisfyingly.LITTLE FISH was a quick read with interesting moments. But the scattered approach that works for blog posts spread over a year works less well in a book short enough to read in one or two sittings. I personally plan to keep an eye on Beyer... I have a feeling if she keeps writing, she'll be capable of great things. But LITTLE FISH is not there yet.

Lots of valuable information. Dozens of strategies with examples and explanations. Organized well and easy to read. About the 'common sense' argument some reviewers expressed- Common sense is not so common and most of the advice here isn't practiced by most people optimally .I suggest that you read the book carefully, devote time to think about the strategies that are presented, internalize the information and apply it in your life.I enjoyed reading this book and I already started applying the advice in my lifegood luck to all :)

If you need to develop your interpersonal skills - read this.

Good points really good, other points really basic . Good introduction to social skills though for someone not looking for advanced social skills

While I enjoyed Dr. Silberman's well organized thesis on developing your PQ (PeopleSmart Quotient), I found his format overly dry and at times lacking in depth. Although well layed out and punctuated by examples, this summary approach was often dry in its presentation and left me wanting more personable material to support the author's explanations. While I would still recommend this book, the potential reader must realize it is organized more like a crash course on relationships rather than an in depth study of them.

This book is very practical, and written in a workbook format. It even comes with a 8 week program. It's a great overview of interpersonal skills.

I purchased this book to use as training material with clients and it has been a wonderful tool so far. My clients seem to enjoy the example dialogue included in the book to illustrate communication skills and this then makes it easier to get the willing to role play those skills themselves. Great book!

PeopleSMART really is helping me bring more clarity in my life with my relationships with others. It offers us the readers a more hands on approach to understand and reflect and apply the concepts. In doing so, this book has helped me improve my relations at work and corrected certain beliefs i had. Answers questions applying in social situations. definitely a must have

Kindle version appears to be badly formatted. Everything is seen in italics and the page numbers of what I imagine was the paperback appear as text.

This is an excellent, must-have addition to the library of any aspiring actuary. Topics from elementary survival models through multiple-state models are explained clearly and cogently, with great practice problems at the end of each chapter that challenge the student to think critically based on the material presented in each section.I would definitely recommend this book for self-study, as the mathematics are clearly developed in each section and the various real-world drawbacks and consequences of particular models are discussed in-depth. None of the math is of the "don't try this at home" level, but obviously you have to be quite comfortable with differential and integral calculus. For the sake of brevity and orderliness, many of the intermediate steps are not shown in the proofs and derivations of formulas, so if you absolutely have to know, it's on you to do the messy algebra work. On the whole, this tends to serve as a very good exercise and will help you to be able to develop the mathematics for yourself; personally I find that one of the most important parts of learning independently is self-reliance and a willingness to think critically, and this book will certainly encourage that. This is an all-around excellent purchase that you cannot go wrong with. An outstanding treatise on the mathematics used in one of the world's top professional fields.

I absolutely love this textbook, it is probably my favorite. I have a bachelors degree in mathematics and have read many textbooks that are considered more "rigorous" than most and this one stands out as a very pleasing read. There are, however, several typos scattered throughout and many are not listed on the errata sheet posted on this textbook's website, but they do not impede readability, distract excessively, or weaken trust in the authors or content. It is very well structured and filled with engaging end-of-chapter problems that are challenging and extremely instructing. This text coupled with the solution manual may be the only things I need to pass the recently revised SOA LTAM exam (previously MLC).

This refers only to the Kindle version. I'm sure it's a great softcover or hardcover book, but the Kindle version is unreadable because the formulas don't render properly. Amazon should be applying some quality control to "scientific" books like this. The end-around is for publishers to insert screenshots of all the formulas because whatever rendering language the Kindle uses doesn't recognize the unique characteristics of formulas.

Great book for aspiring actuaries!

I'm normally a lecture guy, would much rather listen to someone explain a concept than read it out of a book. However, this textbook was so well written that I had to come on here and give it a good review. I have no problem reading and comprehending the material in this textbook soley because of its intuitive prose and plain language approach. Also, the historical background it gives that set up a real framework for the concepts is a huge plus. I actually feel like I'm learning something useful and with real application, rather than just chugging through formulas for their own sake.

Excellent book on life actuarial mathematics, both theoretically sound but it also gives a perspective of practice. I recommend the book.

The book is like new, awesome ! I am very satisfied !

Detailed text for passing your MLC. Bought it as a textbook, binding and paper quality is amazing.
