About the Author

Aeschylus was born of a noble family near Athens in 525 BC. He took part in the Persian Wars and his epitaph, said to have been written by himself, represents him as fighting at Marathon. At some time in his life he appears to have been prosecuted for divulging the Eleusinian mysteries, but he apparently proved himself innocent. Aeschylus wrote more than seventy plays, of which seven have survived: The Suppliants, The Persians, Seven Against Thebes, Prometheus Bound, Agamemnon, The Choephori, and The Eumenides. (All are translated for Penguin Classics.) He visited Syracuse more than once at the invitation of Hieron I and he died at Gela in Sicily in 456 BC. Aeschylus was recognized as a classic writer soon after his death, and special privileges were decreed for his plays.

About the Author

Sunny Seki is the award-winning author and illustrator of The Last Kappa of Old Japan and The Tale of the Lucky Cat. A native of Japan, Sunny studied illustration at Pasadena Art Center of Design. Sunny presents his books and other Japanese folktales at festivals and schools, invigorating his storytelling through shadow puppetry. Sunny is the leader of a Japanese senryu poetry group. He published Gardeners' Pioneer Story, an account of the 100-year history of Japanese gardeners through the sensitive senryu poems created by this group of immigrants. Sunny is now documenting the milestones of Japanese Americans in North America, again through their senryu poetry. Sunny, his wife Judy and their nine children live in San Gabriel, CA.

If you are looking for a really good Japanese story written bilingual English/Japanese this and the other Sunny Seki books are about as good as they come. The story is really well written and the illustrations are great as well. A must have for people just beginning to read kanji.

This is an beautifully made book we read it for students for the new year. It is written in English but has a Japanese translation on every page. This is a book I will keep for years. You can tell that this book was made with love.

This is a fantastic bilingual book - exactly what I wanted to help teach my half-Japanese son a bit about his language and culture. The illustrations really are beautiful, and perfectly capture many aspects of Japanese life. I don't know how historically accurate the story is, but it's nice enough and has a few moral messages for young readers. I would recommend any of the other books by this author as well!

Rather I should say my 3 and 5 year old love it. I don't know why.... It's about a little blind girl in a foreign country with a moral that's not so easy to grasp. Yet they ask me to read it all the time.

The book description says the book is the “Salem Witch Trials meets Mean Girls.” It’s one thing when friends or reviews describe a book as a mash-up, but when it’s in the book description itself, I get a little skeptical. But Mean Girls is a viciously funny movie (“Raise your hand if you have ever been personally victimized by Regina George?”), and I’ve been intrigued by the Salem Witch trials for most of my life. It comes with the territory when growing up less than an hour away from Salem. I’ve visited Salem several times, and I’ve both been in and directed the play The Crucible. But it was the added info that author Adriana Mather is a direct descendant of someone involved in the witch trials that made the prospect of reading the book even more intriguing. Would she make the book be all the things—funny, biting, satirical, and spooky—implied in that mash-up?Absolutely!The story starts with Samantha Mather—a direct descendant (like the author) of Cotton Mather, a minister who supported the witch trials—moving from New York to Salem with her stepmother while her father is hospitalized in a coma. She moves into the old house where her father grew up, a place where strange, ghostly things start happening. In school the next day, her last name alone attracts negative attention among other students, particularly a collection of four girls and a boy known as the Descendants. Their family trees include ancestors who were accused, tried, and hanged as witches back in 1692. No wonder they don’t like Samantha.She gets bullied, and as a teacher, I was slightly put off by how the school population (students and teachers) is somewhat complicit in the bullying. The school administration and her stepmother chalk it up to Sam’s somewhat troubled past. But this is fiction, and as the plot got more mysterious, spooky, gripping, and scathing, it bothered me less because there’s a really powerful and important message buried inside the intricate, twisty plot. But before I get to that message, I want to talk about the characters and plot.Sam is a great narrator. She’s smart, snarky, and stubborn. She lacks some self-confidence because of all that’s happened to her, but she’s also got a strong sense of what’s right and wrong. As her situation at school gets worse, and she is ultimately accused of being responsible for some freaky and dangerous things happening at the town, all she wants to do is help everyone by solving the problem—a curse on the descendants (including herself) of those involved in the witch trials.The supporting cast is also well-developed. I like that the Descendants have distinct voices and personalities, and Susannah—the first to reach out to Sam—was my favorite of that bunch. As in many YA books, there’s a kind of love triangle with Sam and two boys: sweet, noble neighbor Jaxon and proper, mysterious Elijah. I only loosely consider it a triangle, and it was never a distraction, but it was quite the contrary, as both relationships were different, unique, strong and necessary to the story.There are at least two big mysteries, and it was fun watching them converge and diverge throughout the plot. The stakes are clearly raised through the book, and though I sniffed out the ultimate villain, that villain’s true motivations surprised me. I didn’t want to put the book down when I had to, particularly through the climactic confrontation.What elevates this book toward best of 2016 status is the message. Sam is trying to stop a curse that has been repeating itself in Salem since the witch trials, but the unsubstantiated finger-pointing that occurred then has repeated far too many times in history. Whether it was the “Red Scare” of McCarthyism in the 1950s (the inspiration for Arthur Miller’s The Crucible) or the profiling of different ethnicities in many eras of history including the present, the hysteria is unnecessary. And it happens in high school also if one “popular” group of students socially banish others for no reason other than they’re different. Even without witchcraft, this happens, and hopefully well-written books like this can help point out why that’s dangerous while doing so with an enjoyable story too.This book exceeded my expectations, especially after reading a few books that didn’t. Maybe my reading dry spell was a curse, finally broken by How to Hang a Witch and its FIVE STAR rating.

Just finished Heather B Moore's Condemn Me Not: Accused of Witchcraft so I thought I'd give this book a try. Both were priced right for an introductory read of a new author. At least they were new to me. And both were written by descendants from people at the actual Salem witch trials. I guess that was another thing that drew me to this book. I have to disagree with the reviewer who complained of the plot. I thought that was one of the book's strong points. The story was very well told, logically moving from one episode to the next. At least it kept my interest, but maybe I'm too easy.Another complained about repetition which probably was a just complaint. It was the same kind of event--a confrontation or rejection or supernatural experience--from chapter to chapter, and Sam the protagonist's reaction was pretty much the same from chapter to chapter. Kind of reminded me of Book I of the Quijote where the Don moves from chapter to chapter getting beat up but still moving on unaffected, whereas in this book Sam gets scared or rejected and is still pretty much the same person she was at the beginning of the book. But the book doesn't pretend to be high brow literature, but neither does the Quijote for that matter. Both are stories well told with twists and turns to keep the interest going. The Sancho Panza here is a very polished ghost who's pretty much taken in stride.Chapter 30 explains how the ghost does some of his supernatural stuff, a delayed explanation that adds its own level of suspense to the story. Unlike the Quijote I, this book stays on topic. There are no annoying side shows like shepherd stories to distract from the main story line, which might have happened if the author had taken time to explain more about the supernatural, or the fall-out from the witch trials, or--the most troubling omission in this story--why Sam the protagonist never did any homework and never suffered any consequences at school.In the end, the book gives some sympathetic treatment to the ancestral Cotton Mather, but there's no reconciliation with the descendants of the condemned, the girls who attempted to bully Sam the protagonist in high school. But the most obvious question in all this was neither asked nor answered: who in the hell names their kid 'Cotton'? Would he have felt such a need to prove himself by fighting imaginary witchcraft if he had been named Benedict or Arnold or Donald?

In this well-organized and well-edited book, Page clearly demonstrates why his course in Coursera is a hugely popular one. Anyone who has to deal with (or would like a more formal approach for thinking about) strategy, policy, processes, or systems will significantly benefit from this book. One could argue that the models presented are not new - and thats true; what is beneficial to the reader is the well-orchestrated progression of types of models and their assumptions, structure, limitations and examples.Page first makes a well-reasoned plea in favor of approaching any problem with a diverse set of models - each have various assumptions and may therefore implicitly capture (or discard) certain aspects of the system. After motivating the reader with basics of distributions, Page covers an extensive range of models ( a glimpse of the table of contents is sufficient for a potential reader to understand that various modeling techniques and learning mechanisms are covered). Page uses a variety of examples drawn from various domains, though skewed to policy/social sciences. The common theme is mostly "think strategically, in a tractable, explainable way'. The earlier chapters discussing aspects of a model in itself is a useful discussion. The book's organization largely follows his approach in his online course – a “visit to the zoo” - the order in which you visit the exhibits is not that crtitical (nor is this is a book to be necessarily read linearly).While the editing of the book is excellent (no extraneous information, fillers), the book is essentially a text book or a reference source. A student in engineering, political sciences, business/management and any practitioner in these fields will benefit from this book. Most of the content (if not all) is available for free in slightly different formats via his course. However, the utility of having a well-produced book that one can leaf through and pick models to investigate is a huge bonus. There are some changes that makes the content more streamlined too. One wishes there were more examples or challenges to the reader as a "homework'. Nevertheless, this is a must-have book for any one interested in modeling strategic and operational decisions and informatics/machine learning students.(Review Based on an ARC via NetGalley)

the most important thing to know about this 'textbook-like' work is that it takes the 'many model/ensemble' approach very, very seriously and pushes readers hard to think through the fundamentals of how they want to get value from their data....that said, page does an excellent job of addressing/describing those fundamentals....speaking as someone whose exposure to 'model building' came from horribly taught 'econometrics' classes and computationally-intensive engineering classes, i think page's approach far better than what i see in most university econ/engineering curricula.....and, honestly, this would be a terrific text for aspiring MBAs/execMBAs with 'equation-free' educations.....

I have been waiting for this book for 20 years. Too often, leaders of businesses and nonprofits are unaware of the many ways of seeing the world, of using different lenses. The book is not just about data and (clearly described, intuitive) math, it is about thinking logically and better understanding every aspect of the world. It should go beside Lars Skyttner's book on Systems Theory and the books Turning Numbers into Knowledge and Data Science for Business on the thinking person's bookshelf. It is never too late to exercise your brain!

At first I thought this was an odd, over the top skim that lacked real meat. But as the author surveys more methods and starts to contrast them, the book turns into a sort of dictionary of models. It can serve as an important reference to anyone who builds models, especially as a source of alternatives, ways to branch out and look at your data in a new way, to see the strengths and limitations of methods you may be using -- or intend to use -- as defaults. The coverage is so broad, that even veterans may find new perspectives.

I’ve been a huge fan of the author. I watched several of his lecture series on Coursera and The Great Courses. The man is a genius. And this book opened my eyes to a whole new way of looking at the world. A must read.

This book is my constant companion, in my suitcase, on my night stand, in my heart. I bought my first copy some five years ago and always keep it near. I love these poems, these voices. Who ever said we could never really know St Therese of Avila or Meister Eckhart or St. Francis. Their poems tell us everything. But mostly they give us an intimate view into the heart of the ecstatic. Saints. And they show us that the heart's voice is the same as our own. We long for God. We long for the Divine. And in that embrace the words they write are our words. The embrace they feel expresses our deepest longing. It's funny. I expected these poems to express a state beyond my reach. Instead, they share it with me and I see scant difference between me and their holiness. What magic. Ladinsky's gift created the bridge to make this so. And the only way I can think of showing my thanks to him is by giving these poems to others, again and again. As I did again today.

While I enjoyed this book and dog-eared many of its pages, it did become apparent that the poems are Daniel Ladinsky's interpretations, not true translations. There was a sameness to the voice in all of the work and I tired of it halfway through. I would read the enticing biographies of each poet but was then disappointed to not feel the personality described in the bio in the work that followed. However this did make me curious to follow up and seek other versions of the work of these poets, especially Rabia and St. Catherine. I will also dive once more into my Coleman Barks' translations of Rumi. I appreciate "Love Poems from God" for spurring me to do so.

Ladinsky does a short biography of each of twelve “saints” from different traditions, and then gives his translation of a number of poems of each. Included are: Rabia (a Sufi from the 8th Century), St. Francis of Assisi, Rumi, Meister Eckhart, St. Thomas of Aquinas, Hafiz (14th Century Persian), St. Catherine of Siena, Kabir (from 15th Century India), Mirabai (16th Century India), St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, and Tukaram (17th Century India). I love this book. Ladinsky’s translations are down to earth, funny, and touch the heart.

I was cruising through the bookshop at Guadalupe Trappist Abbey in Carlton, Oregon recently when this collection of poetry caught my eye. I have Ladinsky renderings of Hafiz in "I Heard God Laughing", which I've read many times and adore, and this book looked like it needed to be in my collection. Ladinsky selected poems from twelve mystics and saints and translated them in his inimitable fashion, which sometimes is very loose and often very funny. The twelve are: Rumi, St. Francis of Assisi, Hafiz, Kabir, St. Teresa of Avila, Tukaram, St. Catherin of Siena, Mira, St. Thomas Aquinas, Rabia, Meister Eckhart, and St. John of the Cross. I particularly like the non-Christian mystics, four of whom I had never heard of. An insight into the author's "loose" translations is in the section on the mystic, Kabir. Ladinsky writes "....what we see of historic saints is often tremendously edited, as the way a parent might edit what their child hears and sees. Christianity as a whole at times strikes me as a remarkably edited view of God, as do the beliefs of any religion that promotes any kind of division between the soul and creation." Each section has brief background on the saint and then a selection of their poetry. Here's one from Tukaram, who lived in India in the 17th century.Did God really call that famous leader a goofball?If he did, no need to worry about God anymore -He is doing just fine,And we are all a lot better off than I earlier suspected.Or this one from Mira, renowned Indian poet of the 16th century:The earth looked at Him and began to dance.Mira knows why, for her soul too is in love.If you cannot picture God in a way that always strengthens you,You need to read more of my poems.This is a very readable and uplifting collection, one to be savored and read again and again. I like this collection so well, I bought another one for a friend for Christmas

I have never thought of my self as a true fan of poetry, but I received this book as a Christmas gift a few years ago and I absolutely love it. I had just finished a course on the History of Christian Thought and was captivated by the mystic Christian tradition. This book contains poetry not limited to the Christian tradition, but all rooted in a love of God and humanity. The profiles on each of the poets are all beautifully done and really help you to get into the right "head space" before reading their works.I refer to this book often for inspiration, for meditation, and just for fun, and have now purchased another copy after giving the first to a friend. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in word-art inspired by the love of the sacred.

I had originally seen this book in my chiropractor's office. I found it so inspirational and interesting that I asked if I could borrow it. I also knew I had to buy it for myself, to have in my home and read when I need inspiration.I learned about many religious or spiritual thinkers from this book. I was already a fan of Rumi, but had never read St. Catherine of Siena for example, or Hafiz, or most of the others whose writings fill this book. It was a learning experience, and the writings are beautiful and thought-provoking.I also think the book is bound beautifully. So, beautiful thoughts contained in a lovely book. I'm so glad I bought it.

This is a gorgeous book. I bought this copy for a friend because she was reading it at my house. I've had my copy for several years and I still go back and read it from time to time. The author does beautiful translations of some of the most beautifully spiritual writings in existence.

I read the 'New Diet Revolution' book in around 2004 and for 6 months or so it really helped me and my health and also helped me lose weight.Dr Atkins is a brilliant doctor and author and in my opinion, human being.But. I'm not a fan though of the idea that losing a ton of weight per week is healthy, nor that soy products or rice cheese is a health food, or that Splenda or saccharin or protein bars are health foods. I also don't agree that commercially farmed grain-fed meats and commercial diary products are health foods and found it disappointing that pasture-fed meats etc. weren't talked about in the book.While the Atkins diet is hands down better than any low-fat or low calorie diet out there, it is not one I would recommend to others any more. I feel there are better ones out there, which take the best of what Atkins has to say and go a bit further with making it a really healthy diet.I did really well on the original Atkin's diet with 20 grams of carbohydrate a day diet for 6 - 9 months or so. I felt well and had no more hypoglycemia and lost a lot of weight. But after that 6 months was up my body seemed to really struggle with it, perhaps due to the fact I have severe metabolic, endocrine, and cardiac problems. (I'm housebound and 95% bedbound and very disabled.) When I finally went back up to 50 - 75 grams of carbs a day (years later) I felt so much better, and finally was able to start losing some of the weight that had crept back on on my super-low carb regime. It was also a much more pleasant way to eat; being able to have 5 cups of veggies a day and a bit of fruit! Not eating so much meat was also WONDERFUL!!! I feel like staying on this super-low carb diet for so long delayed my health from beginning to improve as well, as it made my body work harder than it had to on food assimilation which of course leaves less metabolic energy and bodily resources left over for the work of healing.Books such as Perfect Health Diet: Four Steps to Renewed Health, Youthful Vitality, and Long Life explain that eating very low carb and making your body convert proteins to carbs puts strain on the liver and uses up bodily resources, generates ammonia as a toxic by-product, puts a person at risk of glucose deprivation if the are ill or lacking in certain nutrients and makes nutrient deficiencies more likely due to lower fruit and vegetable intake. Very low carbohydrate intake can also cause problems with vitamin C utilisation that may even lead to scurvy, as vitamin C is stimulated by insulin. For these reasons they recommend eating an amount of carbs daily which is very close to how much the body actually needs; 200 - 400 carb calories daily (or roughly 50 - 100 grams of carbs daily). I agree with these authors that healthy people will likely have few problems converting one macronutrients to another (such as protein to carbs, and carbs to fat) but for those of us that are ill it is best to save your body the work and to eat foods in the appropriate macro-nutrient percentages to start with. That just seems to make so much sense!I really regret staying on Atkins as long as I did. But I just couldn't accept that the book was wrong, or that what worked for a while so well might be no longer working somehow. My very poor health is now finally very slowly improving and I feel my dietary change is playing a significant role in that.Where Dr Atkins really excels is in his book on nutrients and orthomolecular medicine. If you buy one book with Atkins written on the cover, make it Dr. Atkins' Vita-Nutrient Solution: Nature's Answer to Drugs for sure! That is a real 5 star book. It is still one of the best there is on this topic. It is an amazing achievement by Dr Atkins. I still refer to it regularly. I think it has just been re-released as an ebook too.For books on eating low-carb and high fat, and how to eat the foods we were designed to do best with and so improve your health through diet, I instead recommend books such as Primal Body, Primal Mind: Beyond the Paleo Diet for Total Health and a Longer Life (by far the best diet and health book I know of) and also The Primal Blueprint: Reprogram your genes for effortless weight loss, vibrant health, and boundless energy (Primal Blueprint Series) and Perfect Health Diet: Four Steps to Renewed Health, Youthful Vitality, and Long Life (without their 'safe starches!).5 stars for the work of Dr Atkins but only 3 stars for this problematic book.Jodi Bassett, The Hummingbirds' Foundation for M.E.

Just like any other fad diet, people will loose weight by cutting the carbohydrates from their diet. However, once people begin to add carbohydrates back into their diet, the weight returns. I have two friends who have followed the plan and when they "strayed" from the plan, they gained weight. What's the point of being able to have the sour cream when one can not have the potato! I found the diet far too restrictive. It sounded like an easy plan to follow from the start, but I quickly discovered how restrictive it was. It just goes to prove that the key to dieting is moderation and exercise. We all have the "tools" to do it without following any fad!

I tried out this diet after reading his book. It didn't work. I didn't lose any weight. I gained weight when I got off the diet. I should have read up on him before I read the book. There are many theories out there. But this physician died in 2003 considered 40 to 60 pounds overweight at 258lbs and had a history of congestive heart failure.
