This is an excellent beginners guide to drawing in pen & ink. It will take the beginner into all the things they need to learn.But many books do this - why choose this one? Well, as a person who buys art books obsessively, let me tell you.A. Dunn does not cover the paper with walls of text. He covers the paper with a plethora of examples with a small amount simple easy to follow text.B. Dunn has truly considered all the points. A great many books seem to skip things because the subject is too detailed or maybe they think it will be learned by the more mature artist. Dunn doesn't condescend. He tells you. Or more accurately, he shows. There is a significant amount of the book spent on the importance of texture and how to use it, for example. Many books will show you how to do shadow with cross hatching. Dunn takes that a step further and shows you how to develop a shadow using the texture you are trying to illustrate. Hair, animal skin, etc.C. Dunn takes the learner into the importance of different ways of drawing. Of gesture and detailed drawing and landscape and even doodle.I think what is important about this book is that Dunn is very aware of how he learned and what his questions were and he tried very hard to make a book that would have helped him. And that makes all the difference.

I have been following Alphonso for the past few months and his drawing instruction is superb. I have never related to any other instructor or teaching medium as well as I do to his methodologies. He teaches you how to see complex forms as they really are, simple forms made complex. He really has a passion for drawing and that love shows through in everything he does. He has spent most of his time teaching people for free and he put all of his knowledge into this wonderful book. This is a must own for any aspiring arist or even advanced artists who want to increase their competence in pen and ink.

I originally purchase this book to support the artist. His youtube channel is awesome. He freely gives his time to teach art. That being said, this book is fantastic. Inspirational, informative and a pleasure to read. I heard he put together the book by himself. The book helped me get back into inking and I enjoyed it more than painting digitally. Highly recommend this book to anyone interested in pen and ink. Here are some of my sketches.

I came to pen and ink drawing pretty late in life. I have found it incredibly rewarding and impossibly frustrating to learn, but get so much out of the process of observation that I have stuck with it. In that spirit I have been following Alphonso Dunn's video's on youtube for the last year and a half or so. He always presents fundamental information in an intelligent, insightful, and entertaining fashion but ultimately instills in the viewer the idea that with a little bit of practice you can improve. I have watched and rewatched these videos so many times that I made a personal vow to buy his book as soon as it became available in order to take a small step towards repaying him for all of the hours he commits to his fans. What I received was a pen and ink primer that is as beautifully written as the illustrations found within. It is perfect for a beginner and a valuable resource for pen and ink artists of all skill levels. Well Dunn!

I have been watching Alphonso Dunn on YouTube for over three years and everything I love about his teaching there is found in his book. I have taken MANY art courses and most I paid for, but Mr Dunn's teachings go above and beyond any of the teaching I received else where. What is unique about his teaching is what also can be found in someone who displays good parenting skills. He doesn't just say, "Do this." He says's this is what I do, and I do it because....". He tells you what his thinking process is and that is what is so lacking in most teaching. So often I would watch wonderful artists on line and I was always thinking, " I wonder what is going on in their heads as they make these marks." This peek into the thought process has helped me immensely. So not only so I recommend this book, I highly recommend his YouTube channel. He has a kind, humble spirit which also lends to his ability to "draw in" ( pun intended) a wide audience.

While creating wedding signs from videos on a Youtube I came across a man Named Alphonso Dunn. I am not sure what it was about his voice but he had this tone that was so encouraging. He made everything seem so simple. I felt like "hmmm...Maybe I can do that!" I started with spheres then trees and now I post regularly on my Instagram and people are asking me for prints. I bought his book because it compiles everything I learned from his Youtube channel and placed it in a neat and cometw package. Unfortunately I don't get to hear his encouraging voice as I go through the learning process but Im so happy to have this book in my tool kit. You can see the first thing I drew after I got this book in the pictures. Line of balance baby! I can't wait to get started on the next one. Buy this book!Hillary Chute has written the best single volume overview of contemporary comic art in America today. Period. There is nothing even approaching it and it will certainly be the one to beat for any serious writer going forward. Thank you, Ms. Chute.An academic who can write lively, readable prose? I thought that breed was extinct. The design and production values of this book are also outstanding! Kudos to William Ruoto. Every page is gloss stock and the reproductions all look wonderful. This book is so heavy that you can use it to beat any non-comics fan into submission.Oh, you might quibble with some of her judgements. As a graphic designer I'm not sure this one holds up: the logo for the band Black Flag is "...one of the most important logos in history..." I don't think it even rates in the top 100 'most important' logos of all time. But I admire her enthusiasm and scholarship.

American comics studies scholars have, throughout the past few decades, written much to try and legitimize their chosen field of research. Through the use of historical details and close readings of textual sources, they have made a significant case for the respectability of comics and should be applauded for their efforts. And Chute's book is no different.Her question, why comics? (both a question and an overworked tension), is neatly discussed in chapters discussing comics through eleven thematic/stylistic/content registers. What sets this book apart is the close working relationships with comics producers that she has gained throughout her career in comics studies and provide the material with quotes and an insider's view other studies are (somewhat) lacking. There are some quotes readers will only find in this text, I imagine (or may also be found in her _Outside the Box_?). Some chapters are essential for her close readings, as well: Why Sex?, Why Fans?, Why Girls?, for example; while others are less so: Why Disaster?, Why Superheroes, Why War? are trips down memory lane for readers with a background in the field. All in all, this book feels like an update to Wolk's _Reading Comics_, Beaty's _Comics versus Art_, and (in a way) Pizzino's _Arresting Developments_.Chute has the credibility and the rhetorical skills to produce a text of this kind, and it is very much worth reading, especially if this is the first book you have read on the subject....if that is the case, bump the score to five stars. But one hopes that this will be the final word on this theme. Comics studies would be better served by moving to more productive areas of scholarship (which Chute is no stranger to, either).

Hillary Chute seeks to convince lay-readers on the literary virtues of comics, graphic novels, et al., but attempts to do so with over 450 pages of exacting, pedantic prose.It didn't take long for this reader to become exasperated and bored with such a mess. And by the way, I am someone who read a LOT of comic books in his youth, unlike Ms. Chute who confessed in an interview that she hardly ever read them while while growing up. In fact, I still have many of my Silver Age super-hero mags, as well as copies of several noted underground comix released in the late sixties and early seventies.

Lovely cute little I Ching Book. It's really small... perfect for a stocking stuffer or I Ching student traveler. I Ching divinations on the go you say? Why yes... of course. (Try on, I bet you make a new friend in 5 minutes.). This little guy is packed with info, and remember, you can NEVER have enough different books on the I Ching. ;-)

The translation makes no sense whatsoever. There are grammar errors throughout and the translator appears to have translated word for word with no consideration to making the end result readable or understandable.Also, the book is incredibly tiny. Much smaller than any "pocket" book I've ever had before.

As others here note, this is a handy reference for the experienced user. Beginners would do better with Hilary Barrett, or perhaps R. L Wing or Carol Anthony (among others).Shambhala shows a publication date of 1992; I suspect this is a much earlier work by Cleary, who's reputation rests on clear and accurate translation rather than poetic indulgence. The text here -- the source of which is never stated -- is rather clunky and obtuse, recounting the Confucian epigrammatic description, judgment, and image for each of the 64 hexagrams along with commentaries on the changing lines. Those generally familiar with the I Ching will soon be at home with this bare-bones political manual stripped of Victorian-era sentimentality (via to Legge and Wilhelm) and pop-psychological/new age fluffiness (thanks to latter-day Jungians), and might gain some useful insights. New users will be less than edified by commentaries such as "If you fasten something with the hide of a yellow ox, nothing can unloosen it."The introductory text, though insightful, seems to be written for academics; the book ends with a "List of Hexagrams with their Primal Correlates and Structural Complements." What this means and why the reader should care is not explained.In sum: It is indeed a handy pocket guide for those who (like me) cogitate on hexagrams and do an occasional cast throughout the day, and like to have a concise source-book on hand. Beginners would do well to build their libraries on more accessible texts before acquiring this one.

A great pocket size version of this book. I have several copies of different sizes and different translations. This one is best for travel and being on the go because of its size.

This book works with both bamboo I-Ching sticks and with coins. It is small but mighty.

It is very much pocket sized, and I love that. It is interesting in itself once you figure out how to use it, and once again, it is awesomely little.

Composer Harold Arlen and lyricist E.Y. Harburg were two of Broadway and Hollywood’s most popular songwriters. They wrote the songs for the classic film The Wizard of Oz, for which they won an Academy Award®. Judy Collins has thrilled audiences worldwide for nearly five decades with her magnificent voice and thoughtful interpretations. Many of Collins’s albums have been certified platinum and her version of Joni Mitchell’s "Both Sides Now" has been entered into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Her rendition of Stephen Sondheim’s "Send in the Clowns" won Grammy’s Song of the Year in 1975. Judy's film about Antonia Brico, co-directed by Jill Godmillow, was nominated for an Academy Award in 1974. Brico was Judy's classical piano teacher when she was young and was the first woman to conduct major symphonies around the world. In 2000, Judy founded her own record label, Wildflower Records. I got this because my daughter and I love this song. We found the art illustrations from a certain point a bit repetitive and kind of stagnant and really didn't do the building climax of the song much justice. There were several pages with constellations sporting faces rather than escape an amazing! Imaginative alternate world. It just didn't really deliver like the song does. I suspect this book will end up in my music classroom soon, rather than staying in her collection. It comes with a CD which will be great for kindergarten and first grade kids. I can also use it at an independent work station with a headphone hub.

Since I couldn't find any previews of the actual story within the book, I probably shouldn't have bought it. However, being desparate to fill my "listen to reading" station in my classroom, I went ahead and bought this product. While it is a beautiful book with the classic "Over the Rainbow" song, I was hoping for more in the storyline. Instead, the book is just a bunch of illustrations to go along with the lyrics of the song, which doesn't contribute much learning. So, beware if you're looking for an educational book. However, if you want a book with just the lyrics to the song and a CD to go with, then this is the book for you. :)

I am a Montessori teacher and have read this book to children ages 2 to 6. They loved this book. The illustrations and the music capture their complete attention. Then after several readings, they start to sing with it. I highly recommend this book.

We learned about this book in a sound beginnings music class for kids under 4 yeArs old. The class has a soundtrack for the books narration/song that sings the words to you as you turn the pages. The illustrations create gorgeous imagery. We now use it every night at bed time and I hope it creates a great family tradition/memory our home. It is slightly disappointing that the cd that came with it doesn't match the narration exactly but the idea was great.

I love the illustrations. I love that I have my students listen to the song while having something visual to focus on.

This is a lovely new twist to an old, beloved song. The graphics in this book are beautiful. Only downside is I wish it was smaller and I personally cannot stand dust covers on books. Doesn't make for user friendly reading

I'm not exactly sure what it is about this photograph, but it speaks to me. I had the poster professionally matted and framed for my office and have received many compliments!

I only wish to have seen the exhibit in person. I love Ashes and Snow.

I first saw this poster on the Ashes and Snow website (a beautiful website, by the way) and noticed that the price of the poster and shipping was lower at Amazon.com than just the poster price at Ashes and Snow. My friend was very happy to get this as a birthday gift as she had seen it 8 months back at the school her daughter attended and was a bit mesmerized by it. Thanks, Amazon.
