Used this on a trip, all the recommendations from food to places to see were accurate. I used supplemental recommendations from the internet.
If you're interested only in the east side of south Florida, the Everglades, and the Keys, this book will work nicely for you. But if you're interested in the WEST side of south Florida, you'll be disappointed.I got this specifically because I'll be visiting Florida in October of next year at the end of a Panama Canal cruise that docks in Miami. My plan is to take 7-10 days exploring south Florida by rental car, and then fly home to the Pacific NW.Unfortunately, I'll definitely need another guide to check out Naples, Marco Island, Fort Myers, Sanibel Island -- basically, anything on the Gulf side of the southern part of Florida, since these aren't covered at all other than brief references to things like catching a ferry to the Keys or a place to eat if you're visiting the Everglades.The good news is that Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Boca Raton, Palm Beach, the Keys, and the Everglades are nicely covered with a lot of good current info. I've been to Miami several times, so I'm already somewhat familiar with that area, but I'm definitely looking forward to visiting the Keys as well as the Everglades. Lots of good guidance, including some recommendations for "off the beaten path" attractions.You'll also need to get a good map. The only maps provided in the book are for Miami city and Orlando -- which is in the north part of the state, not the focus of this guide. I really don't understand including it at all!Others have mentioned the printing, and I, too, found it difficult to read. My plan now is to use this along with at least one or two other guides plus various websites to plan my road trip itinerary and take notes, then leave the book home.If your need for a guide to south Florida is very specific to just the few south Florida places that are covered here, and your eyesight is much better than mine, you will probably find this book a reasonable source of info. But the lack of a good comprehensive map and its lack of coverage of the west side of south Florida makes it probably not the best choice. Three stars is the max I can give it.

Easy to use - great info
Ironically (in some dark register of irony), this arrived only a few days before Irma did. An old friend moved from Baltimore to the Gulf Coast, and all her talk of the fabulous birds there, as well as her recollections of a fabulous trip to the Everglades made me think 'Hmmmm. Maybe I'll do this.'Well....it's a safe bet that now I won't, at least for a long time. (She and her partner will probably come stay with us, half the country away for a while.) But I looked through the book, and found it pretty disappointing. There is, first of all, the oddity of the book's omissions. When you read 'south Florida,' you think...ALL of south Florida. But that's not what the book covers. I'm hard-pressed to understand why they did not change the title to make it immediately clear that this was NOT a comprehensive guidebook to South Florida, or......expand their coverage to include all of South Florida. Any way you look at it, it's a curious decision. And, by my lights, at least, an annoying one. I will need an additional guidebook.But what I will look for is a replacement, not a supplement. The print in this book is tiny, and in a low-contrast typeface. It's extremely difficult to read....which utterly undermines its usefulness as a guidebook. I don't get it. I am, generally, a fan of Fodor guidebooks. I can't recommend this one.
FODOR'S SOUTH FLORIDA is a 344 page guidebook printed on glossy paper. The authors are Lynne Helm, Jill Martin, Galena Mosovich, and Paul Rubio. Attached just inside of the rear cover is a map that can be easily torn out of the book, because of perforations. The tear-out map is colorful and is printed on extra-sturdy glossy paper. One side of the map shows all of Florida, together with the southern coastline of Mississippi and Alabama. Once can see Apalachicola National Forest, Elgin Air Force Base, St. Petersburg, Big Cypress National Preserve, Daytona Beach, and Jacksonville. On the flip side of the map are maps of Orlando, Miami, and Miami Beach. On the Orlando map, one can see main streets shuch as Beline Expressway and Turkey Lake Road. On the Miami/Miami Beach Map, one can see Julia Tuttle Causeway and MacArthur Causeway, each of which connects the City of Miami to Miami Beach.The book has six chapters, and these include: (1) Experience South Florida, (2) Miami and Miami Beach, (3) The Everglades, (4) Florida Keys, and (5) Fort Lauderdale, and (6) Palm Beach.PHOTOGRAPHS. Unlike most guidebooks from FODOR'S or from LONELY PLANET, this particular guidebook does not contain many photographs. As you can see from my many reviews of other guidebooks (I posted about 50 reviews), most other guidebooks contain photographs on every other page, resulting in a total of about 200 photographs, some of which have artistic merit. The following accounts for most of the photos in this book. None of them really have any artistic merit. The best photographer for landscape images in Florida is CLYDE BUTCHER. Mr. Clyde Butcher (born 1941) is in my opinion equal to Ansel Adams, in terms of the artistic merit and compelling beauty of his photography. The main reason I like to read and review travel guidebooks, is because of the photography, but this book is more about hotels and restaurants. Anyway, the following accounts for most of the photos in this guidebook:Page 13. Full page image of a star fish.Page 24. Photo of a type of Cuban food, "the Cuban sandwich." The text explains that this sandwich has ham, pork, Swiss cheese, and pickles. The pork is marinated in garlic and citrus juice.Page 40. We see a 12-foot high wall covered with murals showing women. One woman wears a shawl. Another woman wears a Mardi Gras style headress. The text explains that there are many murals in the City of Wynwood and that this city has a "Wynwood Art District" and an exhibition hall of photography and art called, "Margulies Collection at the Warehouse."Page 73 shows five tiny photos of architectural interest. We see stucco frieze of Cavalier Hotel, art deco style of Essex House Hotel, and art deco of "Senor Frog's" which is a restaurant. The next page has larger photo showing more architecture, and the text explains these architectural terms: Banding, Tropical Motifs, Eyebrows, and Rule of Three.Pages 106, 107, 110, 111, 112, 113, 115, 123, 128, 133, and 138 each has a photo of animals and scenery with plants in the Everglades. There is no attempt to provide images of artistic merit. There are just straightforward photographs that provide information only.Page 156 shows a bronze statue of "Christ of the Deep" which was installed underwater, near Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.Pages 165, 171, 172, 184, 199, and page 212 show scenery of beaches and neighborhoods at the beach in the Keys.THE TEXT. This provides some excerpts of the no-nonsense text. In the writing, there is no attempt to be cute or amusing, and there is no journalistic fluff. Regarding a boutique called, "Alchemist" (page 95), we read that, "this boutique has so much personality that it requires . . . two cutting edge spaces in the retail section of . . . trendy Herzog. . . the price tags skew high, yet represent brands known for innovation and edge. Selections span . . . Alaia, Givenchy, Moschino, jewelry on an artistic level including Cristina Ortiz, Lydia Courteille, and Stephen Webster."Regarding part of Everglades National Park (page 118-119), we read that, "Route 9336 travels 38 miles from the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center southwest to the Floriday Bay at Flamingo. It crosses a section of the park's eight distinct ecosystems: hardwood hammock, freshwater prairie, pinelands, freshwater slough, cypress, coastal prairie, mangrove, and marine-estuarine. Route highlights include a dwarf cypress forest . . . and a wealth of wading birds at Mrazek and Coot Bay ponds . . . Anhinga Trail . . . cuts through sawgrass marsh and allows you to see . . . alligators . . . anhingas . . . the junglelike yet also wheelchair accessible Gumbo-Limbo Trail, the Pinelands Overlook Trail, where you can see the park's limestone bedrock . . . before heading out on the trails, inquire about insect and weather conditions . . . even on sunny days, it's smart to bring rain gear."CONCLUSIONS. FIVE STARS for this excellent guidebook. Although I am a genuine expert on sightseeing and vacationing in northern California, southern California, western Oregon, and the low country of South Carolina (but have never been in Florida), my impression is that this guidebook is reliable, appears not to speculate, and it appears that the authors based the text on their own first-hand experiences.
