Review
This celebration of a movement and body of work sometimes considered vandalism and sometimes cultural treasures” reflects its practitioners’ exuberance and recklessness; even the book’s raw-edged cardboard covers, plastered with graphically bold images, immediately signal the playful, gritty, provocative attitude of its subject. Multiple pages of photographs of works, collaged and crammed together, predominate, evoking walls layered with paintings, murals, and wheat pastes”paper-based artworks. Azusa Pacific University art historian Daichendt (Artist Teacher) draws on his academic knowledge and interviews with arts professionals, photographers, collectors, and, most significantly, the street artists themselves to muse on street art as a statement about the failure of modernism and its blurry borders with advertising, celebrity, and establishment art. Rather than analyzing individual works or artists, Daichendt focuses on the phenomenon itself; its roots in graffiti, skate-and-surf culture, and Los Angeles murals, and its relationship to the traditional art world, although articles critiquing some artists’ works appear in appendixes. Unfamiliar readers may be frustrated by the lack of identifying captionsartist credits are only provided in tiny, crowded print at the back of the book, but arguably this choice is justified by the anonymous, outlaw nature of the work itself. - Publishers Weekly

I love this book. I am an avid fan of graffiti and street art and this book is great for my library. I have been buying graffiti related books since Martha Cooper's Spray Can Art and Subway Art. I own close to 20 books on the topics. What sets STAY UP! apart from the others is two things; the first being that it has a very controlled scope on STREET ART (opposed to traditional graffiti), this is important because at this time there are countless books on the topic of graffiti and less focused strictly on the new school street art.The second distinguishing aspect of this book is the actual writing. Most related books become a photo journal and wind up as a coffee table accoutrement. STAY UP! is almost scientific in it's journey. It's arguable the writing is more powerful than the images. Daichendt takes a very unbiased and academic viewpoint on street art and it's quality. You can tell this was written by a professor with an innocent interest in illegal works of art. I hope people that buy this book take the time to actually read it and not just look at all the pretty photographs.Other than that, the photography is great, the book has an interesting graphic design and being from Los Angeles I bought 10 copies for my Christmas gifts this year!
Great pictures and interesting read. I wish more of the pictures were credited with the artists but then, again, I guess many are unknown-but are they really?
Upon receiving this book in the mail, It was hard to put down.Stay Up! includes an excellent collection of photos that capture the richness of the street art movement. In addition, Daichendt's research and reflection of the movement is well articulated, and exciting to read. This book is a must have for anyone interested in or affiliated with street art.
I received this book a week ago and have not been able to put it down. All my other street art books are full of pictures documenting art and maybe speaking a little bit about the art or artist, if at all. This one not only has great photos of recent art but has just as many pages to read about street art. This book is like no other and needs to be a part of your collection!
This book is a great visual history of current Los Angeles Street Art. I heard about this book from friends of mine, and found it to be an awesome collection of photographs and essays.
This is a beautiful and powerful book. When my copy arrived a few days ago, I had planned to glance through it and then pick it up again later, but instead I found myself staring at every page. It contains an amazing variety of art, and good writing.
Very nice book. Be careful the cover is very very fragile.
Fast shipping! I got it for my brother as a gift for him to add to his collection of graf books. Its a Great book about L.A. street artist! Very inspiring!!
