I have mixed feelings on this book. But overall, I highly recommend it.When I first heard of this book, I was really interested in reading it and pre-ordered it on Amazon – since I like to ready and study the history and development of technology and Silicon Valley. I read The One Device over the course of a few days. No doubt, this boo was released a week before the 10th anniversary of release of the first iPhone - Friday, June 29th, 2007, to generate interest and sales. If you want *just* a history of the development of the first iPhone, this book may not be for you – except for the last chapter. If you want to know more about what made the iPhone possible and everything that lead up to the iPhone in a historical context, then you’ll definitely want to read this book. I just felt that the book could have been organized with more about Apple than a lot of isolated chapters with some Apple and iPhone history sprinkled in, where the best chapter on the development of the iPhone was saved for last. These lines from the last chapter succinctly encapsulates the essence of the book and the development of the iPhone:“… The stars aligned. They also aligned with lithium-ion battery technology, and with the compacting of cameras. With the accretion of China’s skilled labor force, and the surfeit of cheaper metals around the world. The list goes on. “It’s not just a question of waking up one morning in 2006 and deciding that you’re going to build the iPhone; it’s a matter of making these nonintuitive investments and failed products and crazy experimentation – and being able to operate on this huge timescale … Most companies aren’t able to that. Apple almost wasn’t able to do that.”The One Device tells the story of the development of the iPhone – but much more so, the confluence of ideas and technologies over time that made the iPhone possible. The book starts off with Apple’s “Explore New Rich Interactions” (ENRI) group and initial experimentations of multi-touch before even thinking about the smartphone. Then a chapter into the history of the phone, electronic communications and the smartphone. Then on to a chapter (“Minephones”) on the sources of materials of smartphones. Then to Gorilla Glass. Then a chapter on the origins and work on multitouch over the decades. Then back to a chapter on Apple (“Prototyping”).Then back to the history of the battery and lithium battery and the origins of lithium. Then a chapter on Apple’s interest in the camera & image stabilization. Then a chapter back to the history of sensing motion (gyroscopes, GPS, accelerometers, etc). And onto a chapter on the ARM microprocessor (“Strong-ARMed”). Then a chapter on cellular network infrastructure. Then back to Apple (“Enter the iPhone”), describing Apple’s thinking on developing a mobile phone, as iPod was taking off. Then to a side-tracked chapter and history of Siri (along with voice recognition, and artificial intelligence). I say side-tracked, since the original iPhone didn’t have Siri – which came out in the Fall of 2011 with the release of the iPhone 4S.Then a chapter on Foxconn and the Chinese labor force that assembles the iPhone. The back to Apple on how secretive it is as well as its marketing prowess (“Sellphone”).Then back to China and description of the Chinese component ecosystem and aftermarket and black market for phones. Then finally the last chapter of the book – the last 50 pages or so (out of 380 pages) – “The One Device” - is the meat of what I was looking for – getting more deeply into the details (as much as one could to a general reading audience).Overall, I would describe The One Device as a book version of the history of the smartphone analogous to the 1996 three hour PBS television documentary about the PC industry titled, “Triumph of the Nerds” – which I often say, is the best three hours of television, or at least documentary television, ever made. If you’re really interested in the history of what made the iPhone possible, this is terrific primer. Some other thoughts – this book really also looks at the cost of the iPhone, smartphone and consumer electronics in general – the mining material & labor cost, the factory worker & cellular tower worker cost, and the environmental cost. And finally, the cost to the Apple employees who gave their lives for the iPhone:As stated in the book, “His doctor, he says, gave him an ultimatum. Do these two things or risk dying – lose weight and quit [Apple]. Thirty-six people I worked with at Apple have died,” he says. “it is intense.”That intensity is also likely the reason that the team that built the iPhone has since scattered to the winds. As of 2017, besides Jony Ive, none of the executive staff at Apple was seriously involved in creating the iPhone.”

Other Silicon Valley observers have written about the development of the iPhone—but it's unlikely that anyone else has delved as deeply into the subject as Brian Merchant . . . or will ever do so in the future, for that matter. Merchant's brilliant new book, The One Device: The Secret History of the iPhone, tells the tale from the mining of the minerals from which the phone is crafted to the oppressive working conditions in Apple's Chinese manufacturing plants and the scavengers at Third World dumps where discarded iPhones are sometimes now found. Those topics bookend the story, which largely consists of interviews with some of the hundreds of people who played a hand in the phone's development.Steve Jobs didn't invent the iPhoneIf you have the impression that Steve Jobs invented the iPhone and is largely responsible for its success, The One Device will quickly disabuse you of that misconception. Without question, Jobs was hugely influential in the project: his obsessive attention to detail, his passion for secrecy, and his genius at marketing all contributed in major ways to the ultimate runaway success of the product. However, not only was the iPhone not Jobs' idea—he actively resisted pursuing the project for several years. (A team of key staff members worked in secret in defiance of his refusal to authorize the work. Their meetings began before the turn of the century. The first iPhone was released in June 2007.) Jobs' insistence on secrecy contributed to the buzz that surrounded the phone in the months leading up to its release, but during the many years that Apple devoted to designing the iPhone, that same paranoid obsession with secrecy impeded the project's progress by compartmentalizing the staff. "Of all the complaints about working at Apple . . .," Merchant writes, "its secrecy was at the top of the list—engineers and designers found it set up unnecessary divisions between employees who might otherwise have collaborated." And Jobs' notoriously volcanic temper and his sometimes abusive treatment of employees may have forced many of them to work longer and harder on the phone than otherwise would have been the case. But it's difficult to believe that morale wouldn't have suffered as a result—and I know from decades of experience as an employer that low morale takes a toll on productivity. As Merchant makes clear, "The story of the iPhone starts . . . not with Steve Jobs or a grand plan to revolutionize phones, but with a misfit crew of software designers and hardware hackers tinkering with the next evolutionary step in human-computer symbiosis." And a truly fascinating tale it is. Ultimately, hundreds of people, not just at Apple but at key suppliers such as Corning and Samsung as well, made key contributions to the success of the iPhone. Merchant does his best to identify them by name and interview them.A century of antecedentsOne of the strengths of Merchant's account is the thoroughness with which he studied the history of technology. In doing so, for example, he learned that "[v]isions of iPhone-like devices can be traced back to the late 1800s." A Finnish inventor "successfully file a patent for what appears to be the first truly mobile phone"—in 1917. And "[b]y 1994, Frank Canova had helped IBM not just invent but bring to market a smart-phone that anticipated most of the core functions of the iPhone." Thirteen years before Apple's product announcement! The world's most profitable product?Merchant frequently refers to the iPhone as "the world's most profitable product." For one thing, it didn't start out that way. Initial sales of the phone were disappointing. Jobs had steadfastly refused to let outside developers supply apps to run on the iPhone. Only when he relented at last and allowed the opening of the App Store did sales explode upwards—and explode they did. Certainly, the profits Apple realizes from the phone are now massive, and it accounts for two-thirds of the company's revenue. Where else might Apple's cash hoard of more than $250 billion have come from? But is it the world's most profitable product? That strikes me as hyperbole. Like other journalists, Merchant clearly fell prey to the fallacy that only huge corporations matter. Although Time lists the iPhone as #1 on its list, the magazine qualifies that claim with the statement that it is "one of the world’s most profitable products." And Merchant's extravagant use of language doesn't stop with his assertion about the phone's profitability. For example, "The iPhone might actually be the pinnacle product  of all of capitalism to this point." Later, he adds, "The iPhone isn't just a tool; it's the foundational instrument of modern life." Really? As of last year, iPhone sales passed one billion units. But there are more than 7.4 billion people on the planet.

I was really looking forward to reading The One Device(on that later) My takeaways are a person never realized how many people had something to do with the making of the iPhone. We give the credit to Steve Jobs and he deserves it with his vision, leadership and most of all his blessings-the iconic iPhone would have never been build. And yet, he fought and had to be persuaded to build a phone, open the App Store, have iTunes in windows and that was not easy as he was the boss, a jerk and a force of nature. The scope of hands that contributed to the iPhone is incredible from the miners in Chille getting the raw material for the lithium batteries, to the hands of brilliant engineers and designers at Apple, to all the past inventions notably multitouch,to WiFi, to chips and so on without them the iPhones will have not been possible. Is an incredible read but my disappointment was the writer Merchant writing style-it wasn't easy to read , he goes way to deep into the weeds(way too much details ) it almost feels like a textbook. I like nonfiction books to feel like fiction, a story with plots, with transition and connecting points and even a little cliff hangers. At the end I rushed it to finish the book. That's not to say I didn't like it and I learned a lot about the iPhone. One last note I am Die-Hard Apple fan but Apple has become the greedy and sometimes heartless corporation(we all detest) with profits margin for iPhone at 40-70% and suicide factory in China and Apple workers in stores barely making above minimum wages is something I hope changes. On looking forward to reading it, the textbook style disappointed me but nevertheless I recommend it especially if you love the iPhone.

Wild Card CHAPTER ONESAVING THE DAY “THEY’RE GOING LONG, RONDE!” Ronde Barber heard the warning, shouted by his twin brother, Tiki, from the sidelines. Like he didn’t know. He was already backpedaling as Harrison Hochberg, star receiver for the Jefferson Junior High Panthers, ran straight at him. Hochberg’s red number 99, outlined in bright yellow, stood out from the black of his Jefferson Panthers jersey. 99—as in “miles per hour.” Ronde knew he had to keep pace, because this kid was fast. Really fast. Was he going to deke first, or would he just put it into high gear as he got by Ronde? To stay with his man, Ronde would have to guess, and guess right. Just like that, Hochberg’s eyes flicked back toward the line of scrimmage for an instant. Most cornerbacks would have taken it as a signal that the ball was about to be thrown. But Ronde was too smart for that. He knew it was third and long, with only ten minutes left in the game. He knew that the Panthers, with only a two-point lead, would be looking for a big gainer. He didn’t jump at the bait, and when the receiver kicked it into high gear, Ronde stayed with him step for step. He didn’t look back for the ball—not yet. He remembered Coach Wheeler saying, during one of their team video sessions, “You can’t keep up with someone fast if you’re looking behind you.” Ronde kept his eyes squarely on number 99. He waited till Hochberg turned his head to find the ball. When the receiver’s eyes grew as wide as saucers, Ronde finally turned, knowing the ball was about to arrive. His hands and the receiver’s hands reached out together. There was the ball! Ronde reached even higher . . . Suddenly his feet were caught up with the feet of the receiver! They both went down in a heap, tumbling over and over each other. “Interference!” number 99 yelled, getting back up and pointing at Ronde as he hopped up and down in frustration. “No way!” Ronde said. “I was going for the ball!” But the bright yellow flag was already sailing through the air, the whistle was blowing, and the ref was pointing straight at Ronde. “It was incidental contact!” Coach Wheeler yelled from the Eagles’ sideline. “No foul!” Of course, it didn’t matter what Coach Wheeler, or Ronde, or any of the Eagles said. The ref was the law, and he was motioning to the kids with the chains to come fifteen yards downfield. “First down, Panthers!” the ref said. He blew his whistle again, and pointed to the Eagles’ end zone. Ronde sniffed back the hurt and bit his lip hard. It was so unfair! He’d known what was coming, he’d played it perfectly—and how did he get rewarded? With a flag! “Come on, come on!” shouted Mr. Pellugi, the defensive coach. “Get back in the game, Barber!” Ronde jogged back to the huddle, but his heart was still out on the field, where it had just been stomped on by the ref. “Bad call, yo,” said Bill Reeves, the Eagles’ other corner, patting Ronde on the back. “Never mind. Let’s stiff ’em now.” Ronde nodded, shaking off his emotions. It didn’t matter how bad he felt. He had a job to do, and he meant to do it, no matter what. He watched his man line up, and thought, I’m gonna bump him right out of this play. But the Panthers’ receiver never came past the line of scrimmage. Instead he waited until the quarterback faked a handoff, then rolled out. Hochberg got into blocking stance and came straight at Ronde. Now the tables were turned. Ronde tried to avoid the hit, get by his man, and reach the quarterback. But just as he was about to make a tackle, he was slammed to the ground with a hard hit from his right! He was still lying there when the roar went up from the Panthers and their fans. TOUCHDOWN! Ronde just lay there for a minute, panting. He was in pain, but his pride was hurt worse than his body. Now the Eagles were behind by nine points—30–21—with less than ten minutes left to play, in a game they had to win! The truth was, they were all must-win games from here on out. The Eagles had already lost twice this season—in the first two games. One more defeat and it would take a stroke of incredible luck to get them into the play-offs. If they wound up missing out on the postseason, it would be the first time in seven years that a Hidden Valley Junior High team didn’t make the play-offs. The shame of it would be hard to bear, Ronde thought, dragging himself over to the sideline and practically falling onto the Eagles’ bench. “Get back out there, Barber,” Coach Wheeler barked at him. “Kickoff’s coming. Or are you too out of breath to return it?” “No, no, I’m okay,” Ronde assured him, forcing himself to get back up off the bench and into the game. “’Cause I can get someone else to run back the kickoff . . .” “I’m going! I’m going!” He swallowed hard. “Coach, I didn’t—” “I know you didn’t foul him, Ronde,” Coach Wheeler said. “But that’s how it goes sometimes. You don’t always get the breaks.” Ronde sighed, and nodded. He knew it was true. “But, hey—on this team we pick each other up,” Wheeler said. “Keep the faith, son. Let’s get us a win here.” Tiki came up to him and put a hand on his shoulder. “Hey, no worries, Ronde. We’re gonna pull this one out. You’ll see.” Ronde looked back at his twin. It was the same face he saw in the mirror every day—they were so identical it was hard even for their close friends to tell them apart. But there was a difference right now. There was hope in Tiki’s eyes. Ronde had never felt more defeated in his life. “Come on, man, give me the handshake.” Tiki held out his hand, waiting for the secret ritual shake they’d made up over the course of the season. Ronde just sighed. “Come on, come on!” Tiki demanded. “No time for losing!” Ronde nodded. Tiki was right. There were still nearly ten minutes left. Plenty of time to make up for that penalty—plenty. “Go get ’em!” Tiki told him as they gripped fingers, tapped knuckles, then snapped their fingers twice before slapping five low, then high. Ronde ran back out onto the field, buckling the chin strap of his helmet. He waited for the kickoff, ready to do something to turn the game around. Tiki’s right, he told himself. We can still win this thing. And we will. Up went the kick, low and end-over-end. It hit the ground, then bounced off to the left, far away from Ronde. He ran after it in a panic, and got hold of it just in time to get piled on by the entire Panthers kicking squad. “Great. Just great,” Ronde muttered to himself as he trotted slowly back to the bench. The ball was spotted at their own fifteen—a long way from the end zone. Now the Eagles lined up on offense, and Ronde tried to catch his breath on the bench. All day the favored 5–2 Eagles had been trading scores with the 3–4 Panthers. The Eagles, after those first two losses, had been on a roll, winning five games in a row—three of them over highly rated opponents. Two weeks ago they’d gone over to Martinsville and beat the always-dangerous Colts for the second time in three weeks, 34–17. And last week they’d stomped on the mighty Blue Ridge Bears, 30–10. On top of that, Ronde reminded himself, the Eagles were the defending district champs. Jefferson hadn’t made the play-offs in three years. The Eagles had every reason to be confident about today’s contest. But, as Coach Wheeler liked to say, “That’s why they play the games.” Statistics meant nothing. The past was the past. Only today mattered. Only now. Only this game . . . The Eagles’ quarterback, Cody Hansen, took the snap, and quickly handed off to Tiki. He sliced through the Panthers’ defensive line, made a quick cut, and took the ball all the way out to the forty-yard line before he was dragged down from behind. Ronde let out a whoop and stood up, clapping and pumping his fist. “Yeah!” he shouted. “That’s how we do it!” He could feel the momentum shifting like a tidal wave. On the Eagles’ next play, Tiki took another handoff for fifteen yards, crossing into the Panthers’ territory. Tiki looked unstoppable! Ronde and the rest of the defense cheered, and jumped up and down excitedly. But all the while they kept nervously glancing over at the game clock as it ticked down the minutes. The next play was a pass to Fred Soule for a gain of seven. “Give it to Tiki again!” Ronde shouted, and he wasn’t the only one yelling for number 2 to get the ball. Cody must have heard them, because on the next play he faked a handoff to Tiki, then found him in the flat for a quick completion. It looked like Tiki would be tackled, but he turned the play into a big gain by slipping the grasp of his man. Tiki took off like a rocket, heading for the end zone. He almost got there too, but the Panthers’ free safety, who was playing deep, managed to stop Tiki from notching the score. It didn’t matter, though. Two plays later Tiki dove over the wall of defenders and hit pay dirt. Touchdown, Eagles! Kicker Adam Costa made the extra point look routine—which it was, for him. Adam had the best record in the league, for the second straight season. And to think, as a seventh grader he’d barely made the team! Now the Eagles were down by only two, with six minutes still left to play. Adam kicked off to the Panthers, and Ronde, the bird dog on special teams, sped down the field like he’d been shot out of a cannon. He saw the ball tumble into the arms of number 5—his own number, except on the opposing team. Ronde flew at the ballcarrier, and hit him so hard that the ball came loose! Too bad it went straight into the arms of another Panthers player. Still, the Eagles now had their opponents pinned deep in their own territory. If the Panthers wanted to run out the clock, they’d have to either run for a couple of first downs or risk throwing the ball downfield. If they failed either way, they risked stopping the clock and giving the Eagles time for a desperate comeback drive. After a running play that went nowhere, the Panthers tried to pass on second down. Ronde bumped his man coming off the line, and the receiver stumbled and fell. Now the quarterback had to scramble. He spotted a receiver on the other side of the field, and was about to throw to him, when Eagles’ defensive end Sam Scarfone tackled him for a sack! Sam was a ninth grader, but he looked like one of those huge linemen over at the high school. He was a leader on the Eagles, and for a while early in the season he’d sided with Cody Hansen against Coach Wheeler. But ever since he and Cody had come around, the Eagles had been winning. And now Sam had made a game-changing play. On third and long, Ronde knew the Panthers would be throwing downfield. He decided not to bump his man this time, but to keep pace with him step for step. He was sure he could do it. They ran down the field, and Ronde stuck with number 99 like a barnacle on a rock. As they both leapt for the ball, their feet got tangled again—just like before! Hochberg went down as Ronde batted the ball away. He got up and looked around for the yellow flag, hoping the refs wouldn’t make the same bad call as before. No flag. Thank goodness! Ronde blew out a relieved breath and clapped his hands. “Interference!” the Panthers’ coach yelled, pointing right at Ronde. The official shook his head and said, “Incidental contact. No penalty.” But the coach didn’t see it that way. He called a timeout and walked over to the ref. Ronde couldn’t tell what was happening, but before he knew it, Coach Wheeler walked over too. It seemed like forever until the ref called, “No penalty.” The dismayed receiver trudged over to his own sideline. His coach and teammates came over and gave him pats on the back for support. Ronde smiled as he lined up to receive the punt. He’d been lucky this time. He knew the call could just as easily have gone the other way. But that was the nature of the game. Sometimes you got the calls, and sometimes you didn’t. Either way, though, everyone had to play by the same rules, and the ref’s word was the law. Here came the punt. Ronde grabbed it cleanly, and took off running. The first two Panthers who grabbed at him came up with nothing but air. By the time he was brought down, by the punter, Ronde was at the Panthers’ forty-three-yard line! He looked up at the clock. Only fifty-four seconds left to play! Still, it was plenty of time for the Eagles to make up the two points they needed. A field goal would do it, and Adam was already warming up his golden foot on the sidelines. On first down Cody took the snap, faked a handoff to Tiki, then rolled out right, looking deep. Fred Soule and Joey Gallagher were both well covered, so Cody looked short and found Tiki at the thirty-five, hitting him right in the numbers. Tiki wheeled around and fought for another seven yards, down to the twenty-eight. “Wow!” Adam said to Ronde. “Did you see him carry those two mega-thugs with him? Your brother is mad strong!” “Not as strong as I am,” Ronde said coolly. Adam laughed. “Right. I’m sure. We’ve got to set up an arm wrestling challenge one of these days.” They turned their eyes back to the field. On second down and three Cody handed off to Tiki, who slashed through the huge hole carved out of the defense by Tiki and Ronde’s old pal, center Paco Rivera. First down, Eagles, at the Panther ten! Too bad they were out of time-outs, Ronde thought as he jumped up and down in a panic. Coach Wheeler was frantically signaling to Cody to stop the clock. At last, with only six seconds left on the clock, Cody realized what was up and saved the Eagles from disaster by spiking the ball. “Okay, Costa,” Coach Wheeler said, patting Adam on the back. “Get out there and win us this game!” Adam trotted onto the field and got into position. Joey Gallagher, the holder, kneeled down at the seventeen to take the snap. Paco snapped the ball, and Adam drilled the kick right between the uprights, with plenty of leg to spare! The Eagles screamed for joy and ran out onto the field as the final gun sounded. They’d saved their season with a last-second win, 31–30! “That’s about the fourth time in the past season and a half that Adam has saved our bacon,” Ronde told Tiki as they high-fived each other. Meanwhile, the rest of the Eagles were carting Adam off the field on their shoulders. “It’s amazing, isn’t it?” Tiki said. “Remember when we thought he’d never even make the team?” “Uh-huh,” Ronde said with a laugh. “Worst athlete in the history of our Peewee League—but of course, that was before we found out he could kick!”

I loved this book.Wild Card is about the Tiki and Ronde Barber having 5 games remaining in their second year of Junior High. The team is having trouble after their kicker (Adam) ends up on probation for bad grades. The Twins help Adam bring up his grades and get back on the team. The book is great. I loved how the team showed determination to do great without their star kicker (Adam). This is their chance to make it to the playoffs and they will do whatever they can to prove they are the champions.Wild Card will make you want to read the whole series.

If your child lives and breathes football like my eight year old son, he or she will love this book and the entire series! It kept my son turning pages like crazy. It teaches kids to work hard, be honest, and never give up. It also emphasizes how anyone can achieve their dreams, no matter how big the dream or how small the child. Its messages are just what kids need and are delivered in a well written, exciting story. I highly recommend this series. All the books are Accelerated Readers as well, which is a great bonus.

My son is reading it and says it is a good book so far. He loves anything sports and it gets him to read.

Good book

My son hated reading. It was such a task to get him to read even with all the popular books among 3rd graders. He loves football so I tried these books and he has gone through 5 in the series so far.

Good reader for younger readers! My grandson loves all of Barber's book because he loves sports. I encourage him to read anything he likes (with parents approval) .

My 11 yr. old twin boys, who also play football, fought over who would read this book first. (They have other Barber books.) They realted to it and thoroughly enjoyed reading it. One of the twins hates to read but couldn't wait to start it.

My nephew loves to read and I wanted to get him some books that he could read over and over. I saw Ronde & Tiki Barber on a talk show talking about them writing an African American children's book, specifically for young boys. I ordered all their books----He Loves Them!

If you are looking for a method of actually accessing your thoughts and your mind and truly having the ability to "program" yourself just like a computer.,.you MUST get this book. You will learn how to decrease or eliminate negative thoughts. Techniques for being a better friend and communicator are unlike anything else I have found in other books. This book is a MUST ! Please...it changed my life very powerfully. I finally am not the victim of a run-away train of a mind. It's actually quite incredible how far this book will take you. There is absolutely no book I can recommend more. If you were ever looking for the Operator's Guide to your Mind....you have Found it !

It's been some time since I revisited the NLP system and I tell you, this book hits the spot on explaining the concepts in clear language. Not only does it explain things well, I loved the 21-day guide to start applying the important principles. Great stuff !! I would recommend this book to anyone trying to incorporate some self-improvement technologies in their lives.

I read this book on my holiday and it really helped think some things through and start changing. I have the feeling many times in life that I'm living a bit by default... just following the flow of everyday life. This book challenges you to dig deeper into your goals and desires, reflect on your priorities and question your daily behaviour and habits. Whatever subjects it explores, it always roots the theory into practical exercises you can start applying immediately. After you've read through the main book you can also try the day-by-day guide on applying all the principles that's at the end of the book.Highly recommended overall!

I became an NLP practitioner in the mid 90's and feel like I have read "everything" written on NLP. This is one of the most "down to earth" readable selections to come along in a very long time. It is appropriate for a beginner or someone who has been studying NLP for years. It's as if a trusted friend is walking you down a path to an unknown, but exciting and enlightening destination. It is a must read for everyone who wants to tune themselves up, and have greater influence on those around them.

It is a very true a insightful read. Clear and cocise ways to achieve the desired out come and comes with excersies and other resources to help you study. I already knew most of this information because I’m curios on the topic but if this is the first book you read toward understanding yourself it will be very benefitial.

This is a very useful book for anyone who is interested in a comprehensive introduction to NLP.The authors explain basic concepts using language that is easy to understand (without getting bogged down by the plethora of technical jargons that NLP is known for). They start with basics regarding how NLP is useful in improving oneself, then goes on to explain techniques for improving communication, and finally applying these techniques to mediation and negotiation. In the many exercises, practical step-by-step guidance is provided, so that the reader can get a feel for various techniques, even without a coach. In all, a very good read for any reader who is drawn to the subject. Among the books that I have read about introducing NLP to readers in general, I think this is the most well written.

This has been one of the most powerful books I've read when it comes to personal development and constructing a powerful mindset. I believe every single person needs to read this book and study NLP to better understand themselves and others. The quality of our lives is determined by the quality of our emotions and the strategies in this book allow you to better control your emotions and therefore, the quality of your life. Many people, including my past self, suffer because we weren't taught how our thoughts and emotions work and how to control them. As a result, you have many people who struggle with anger, stress, depression, jealousy, and many more negative emotional states. It's a fairly long book but I didn't find myself becoming bored at any point; I was always learning new and useful concepts to implement into my own life. I highly recommend that everyone read this book.

It has taken this book to put it all together for me. I have studied NLP since earning my Prac and Master Prac designations in 2004. This book took all that information, and then some, and put it in proper perspective, order and understanding. For me it was like a new light had been lit. I highly recommend this book to all levels of NLP - novice to advanced. The exercises are described so that the reader can experience the benefits of the portion of NLP being taught. I have already use the "keep, stop, start" exercise with clients and witnessed the opening of communication that had atrophied during their relationship. There are so many positives to attach to the book that space prohibits. I would look on this book as a working manual to be returned to time and time again for new insights and tools in helping yourself and others to obtain the positive lives and behaviors they seek. Five stars seem not enough.

Five Epic Disasters (I Survived True Stories #1), by Lauren Tarshis

From School Library Journal

Gr 2–5—Tarshis retells the stories of five natural disasters, including the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, the Children's Blizzard of 1888, and the Henryville Tornado in 2012, from the third-person perspective of a young person who survived each of the events. The narratives are factual yet still lively and suspenseful enough to hook readers. Students will also devour the author's "files," a brief conclusion to each tale that includes maps, fact boxes, survival tips, and her inspiration for each story. For instance, Tarshis relates how she first learned about Walter Allen nearly freezing to death in a prairie blizzard from reading David Laskin's The Children's Blizzard (HarperCollins, 2004). Black-and-white illustrations and photos are numerous and appealing, such as a child holding baseball-sized hail in Henryville and a woman in a long gown working out in the Titanic's fitness room. Students wishing to read lengthier treatments of the disasters will find suggestions at the book's end. Ideal for a high-interest pick or a read-aloud for older students.—Vicki Reutter, State University of New York at Cortland

None of the stories are complete. Each story is 30 pages long when in reality they are 90 - 100 pages. My son was so excited to get this book only to be let down that only 1/3 of each story is in this book. If you want the full stories buy them seperately.

I have a visual disability and depend heavily on the ability to adjust the font size on my Kindle books. I was not able to adjust the font on any of the "I Survived" series. I now have to find someone to read them to me so the money I paid is not wasted. I am looking forward to hearing the stories, but even if they are A-1, the fact that I am not able to read them myself puts a damper on my rating. If, like me, you are a Kindle reader that uses larger fonts, you may want to reconsider purchasing or downloading this series.

My 8 year old son loves these books. I personally felt the subject matter may be too dark for him, but since he was reading these series in school I figured I'd let him decide what's too dark for his taste. He reads the books from this series over and over. I was surprised how well these books make history interesting to kids of his age by relating the story some someone similar to their age. He just may know more about Titanic than I do.

I purchased this book for my son who is obsessed with weather and natural disasters. He absolutely loved this book! I actually read the book for myself and was amazed at how wonderfully well written it was. Not only did it have tons of descriptive details, we both loved that it was written about actual events in history. If you enjoy reading about natural disasters, this is the book for you! Not only do you get a great story, you get 5 great stories that will keep the pages turning.

I bought this for my son who loves reading books based on real stories. He is 7 years old and in 2nd grade. He loved the I Survived Natural Disasters book he bought from the book fair, so this one was purchased for an upcoming plane trip. He couldn't wait to read it, and had the first 2 stores read before I packed it!All 5 stores are in one book making it easier to keep up with and take along in his backpack to read at school.Looking forward to my younger children being able to read it in the future. And of corse, it was a better deal on Amazon than it would have been at the book fair.

All of these are highly shortened versions of the stories-- maybe 30 pages long-- instead of the normal 100+.

My son is 8 and loves history and true life books. He has had trouble reading, but books like this have really helped him learn the joy of reading and brought his below grade level reading from last year to slightly above this year. These books are great.

Great condition. My 5th grader loves this series as he can learn more than what is taught in school.
