The Cat and Bones series (also known as the Nighthuntress series) is basically a thoroughly R-rated Buffy with the beautiful redheaded vampire slayer hooked up with her 200-year-old British vampire lover. The series has great action, great humor, some pretty decent sex scenes (which I normally just skip through), and a fun premise. The books are probably not for everyone as they're designed to be pure entertainment but I enjoyed them a great deal. At Grave's End picks up almost immediately after the previous volume with Cat having comfortably slid into her role as a government vampire slayer. She's brought Bones along, which is an alliance working better than it probably should. They're targetting the worst of the undead like those who pick up children at Chucky Cheese and who prey on senator's daughters. A chance encounter with Cat's father, though, results in them getting involved in a whirlwind plot between two of the oldest vampires in the world. On one hand is Mencheres, an ancient Egyptian prophet who wants to make Bones co-ruler of his lineage, while on the other is Patra the daughter of Cleopatra who is insane with her desire to destroy our heroes because of a prophecy from before they were born. I really liked this book because it got into the nitty gritty of vampire politics. We have an idea of who the strongest vampires in the world are, how alliances between bloodlines work, and what is the basis for conflict between them. Mencheres is an interesting character and reminds me of Highlander: The Series' Methos. He's not really a good guy or a bad guy but he's on our heroes' side and that's a better place than against it. Patra is also the strongest villain in the series so far. While her name is somewhat groan-worthy, I think she manages to convey both menace as well as a strong sense of power. She makes numerous decisions which are smart, intelligent, and threatening. Really, right up until the end, she appears like she's going to destroy not on our heroes but every single vampire who sided with them. The book also introduces Dracula, a character who has been done hundreds of times before but never like Jeanine Frost handles him. Taking the perspective he's the historical character of Vlad the Impaler, she treats him as a mid-level master vampire who is neither exceptionally cruel nor especially good but fits in with the rest of the undead. The historical details aren't always one-hundred percent accurate but are close enough that fans (for lack of a better term) of the actual person aren't confused that this is meant to be the true Vlad III. One element which is rather annoying in the book is the puppy-dog-devotion-bordering-on-stalking which occurs with the character of Tate. A government agent hopelessly in love with Cat, he ignores every possible sign and statement from her she isn't interested. Really, I'm surprised she didn't file a sexual harassment lawsuit complaint against him. In conclusion, At Grave's End is a fun, engaging, and entertaining read from beginning to end. If you're looking for simple enjoyable urban fantasy adventures, then this is definitely the series for you. Some may be put off by the explicitness of the sex scenes but they're not so numerous as to disrupt this is primarily an adventure book.10/10

I had a great time with this book during this re-read! I fell in love with this series quite a few years ago and decided to get the audiobooks since I knew that I would want to revisit this world. This is the third book in the Night Huntress series, which really does need to be read in order. There were parts of the book that I did remember but I had lost quite a few details over the years. I am very slowly working my way through the series for the second time and found it to be just as enjoyable as it was the first time around if not more.I love Cat and Bones. More accurately, I like Cat but I LOVE Bones. There are actually a lot of great characters in this series but Bones is my favorite by far. Bones can do just about anything and doesn't make apologies. His love for Cat is sincere and unquestionable. I do like the two of them together. I must admit that there were a few times in this book that Cat got on my nerves just a bit. I like Cat and I understand that she has some great ideas but it just seemed odd that all of these really old vampires were taking her lead. I wanted to be quiet for a minute and maybe learn something from the very capable people she had around her. I also thought that Cat took some unnecessary risks and put herself in some uncomfortable positions which illustrated the fact she still has a lot to learn. I did think that Cat really showed her strength when everything went horribly wrong and she was forced to take a leadership position.The secondary characters played really important roles in this book. I believe that this is Vlad's introduction in the series and I was quickly reminded why I love his character. The background that we learn about his character in this book was very touching. Mencheres was in the spotlight for a lot of this book and I have always enjoyed his character. I liked the developments in vampire politics that revolved around him and found his backstory to be rather eye-opening.This was an exciting story. There were a few scenes that stayed with me over the years which really says a lot about the book. There were some rather emotional moments in the story which I thought were handled very well. I liked that there was such a wide range of emotions in a single story and it all worked so well.Tavia Gilbert did a fantastic job with the narration of this book. This story has a pretty large cast of characters and she handles all of their different voices very well. I am actually rather amazed by the wide range of accents and voices that she does use in this audiobook. I thought that she expressed all of the emotion and excitement of this story expertly. I would say that her narration added to my overall enjoyment of the story.I would recommend this series to others. This is an exciting installment in a series filled with wonderful characters and intense situations. I can't wait to continue with my re-read of the series!

Over all I think this book on lettering is pretty decent. The author has chosen to give an overview of the possibilities for hand lettering by giving a brief introduction of the various sorts of lettering one might do and she includes instruction and practice pages too. While yhe content is slim, it is well written, logically laid out and not overwhelming. Certainly the book is worth the purchase price.However, the author makes a disingenuous, and unecessary claim that, somehow using a brush pen for lettering is not "calligraphy" and that, in order to do "real calligraphy" one must use a dip pen and ink. She then explains that the method, practice and storkes are the same for each but still, one can onky claim "calligraphy" if one uses a dip pen and ink. This claim is complete hogwash snd akin to claiming one isn't eating sushi if one doesn't use chopsticks to do so.The truth is that there are many styles of calligraphy (which simply means beautiful writing) and many of them can be done with a brush pen or a dip pen and ink. A brush pen is simply a tool. It is up to the artist to apply that tool in an approprite way. To make a distinction between one tool or another as being the only "real" way is misguided at best. At worst it discourages students by creating artificial elitisim around a tool that has been evolving for thousands of years. There is no "real calligraphy", instead there are just different styles of letters and an assortment of tools (including nibs, quills, fountain pens, reed pens, brush pens and even ball point pens) to achieving this thing we call beautiful writing.

I love this book! It is exactly what I was looking for. I have enjoyed trying to do some hand letter designs and decided to make it my summer hobby. The book has tutorials that are short and to the point. It teaches you one technique and you can spend as much time practicing as you want before creating your "final piece" at the end of the tutorial. There's only one practice page for each tutorial which is fine by me because I didn't want to buy a book with a ton of blank pages...I can use a notebook to practice. I like the final piece page because it's almost like a test for myself before moving on to the next tutorial. This book is thick and covers tons of stuff. At the end it even has a tutorial on how to digitize your work. As a beginner this is exactly what I was hoping to find.

Learning the basics of how to start a drawing is essential to anyone with an itch to paint or draw and this is a great way to learn. It really helps you learn to draw from beginning to end. The practice pages were so fun and in some cases funny [ originals where definitely better then my attempt at them ]. This book was an absolute blast! Learning to do a variety of different things from plants to letters was just such a blast. Stop and smell the roses...

You will develop your own style and add to what you learn from this author. This book could also be used to help someone who has poor penmanship. Instructions are given for each letter of the alphabet in upper and lower case. There are practice pages or use tracing paper to help make an exact copy and practice until the technique is perfected. Once this skill has been accomplished the applications are endless..

I find myself writing absolutely beautifully on every writing surface. It's becoming habit. I also had no idea workbooks/coloring books were still all the rage. I love having space to practice for a book like this. It's considerate of my needs as a reader that I might not always have paper lying around. It was a wonderful practical element that this book provided the pages for me to practice the lettering as I read about it. If you like to doodle, if you like to craft, this book is for you! It's going to be a perfect addendum to your holiday gift prep, I promise you!

This book has been a fantastic start for me in botanical drawing. It has helped me perfect some of my drawings and I would highly recommend it. I will be referring to it for many years to come.

This workbook was just what my lettering needed! It seemed to cover everything too: from beginning strokes to master and then on toserif, san serif, calligraphy, faux calligraphy, modern calligraphy, block letters, drawing, shadows, texture, flourishes and putting it all together to make sense and be beautiful. I definitely recommend it!

The paper version is probably a lot more helpful. There are helpful tips and examples but its difficult to practice just looking at a small screen. For someone with experience it would be a great information source. Not for beginners.

I just got this book yesterday. I dove in immediately, anxious to dig in and learn how to use my Raspberry Pi to its fullest potential.This book offers plain English instructions and explanations. I was pleased to see that this is not another book that reads like a manual. The author does not assume that you are already an expert, but instead explains the jargon and concepts in order for the reader to GAIN an understanding. The reader stands to learn a lot from picking up this book.

Well-written and organized introduction to the Raspberry Pi. A few too many "Linux amazing, Windows bad" comments and insinuations sprinkled throughout the text for my liking but bashing Microsoft is all the rage nowadays, so not too surprising. The full-color pictures and multi-color text portions make the book an enjoyable read.

I looked at a number of Raspberry Pi books and this was one of my favorites. It did a good job of explaining how the Pi worked and how to get started with a number of fun projects.

Very disappointed in this book, I pre-ordered this book back in August knowing that it was not complete, and was happy waiting, and would still be happy waiting if they would have proofed this book. Mind you I have only skimmed threw this book, but I have found at least 4 errors in 2 chapters. Then there are the "tiny URLs" everywhere. The book does not explain as much as it is sending you to places on the web. When I buy a book I like to read a book, and I also like to have all my information right there, without having to run to a computer every other paragraph to get the full answer. Links and sites come and go, which makes this book useless in the near future if not currently, again I have only skimmed it so links could already be gone.I would send it back but that would cost me money. So I am stuck with it.So if you still are thinking about this book.1) There are errors2) You need a computer to reference all the links to get the full picture of what he is trying to do.3) Good Luck!

Each one is taken in a different direction and resentments boil up with tragic consequences. Some, having been kidnapped, end up in interesting situations while others find their way home.Quite engaging and this could be the final volume although there are still situations which are not totally resolved. I first heard about this book when I read the following review on about.com:http: // visualbasic . about.com / od / vbbooks / fr / Br9780735661707.htmIt piqued my interest, despite my being retired, and having known for some years that I would never be interested in becoming manager of software projects -- definitely moot at this point! Many years ago, I dipped my little piggies into project leadership (not even real management!),and have remained emotionally scarred ever since.When I started reading this book, my initial reaction was that the author was a self-centered, opinionated, arrogant jerk with way too much self-confidence. But then he's a relatively senior manager at Microsoft -- that's probably par for the course: he wouldn't be where he is if he wasn't capable nor full of confidence! His prose is, er, entertaining, and doesn't pull any punches -- intentionally so; he does it for effect, and to get a reaction (these were articles originally written for an internal publication at Microsoft). It took a while for me to get over this, and start listening to him (while gritting my teeth).I didn't find the first few chapters terribly absorbing, but I stuck with it, and gradually things started to get more interesting, until -- around Chapter 5 -- I found material I could really relate to.It was interesting to read in this book so many of the tenets that should have been followed at one of my former employers (a very large software company), but weren't. This book suggests very strongly that Microsoft has a much better handle than my former employer (a Microsoft competitor) had on how to develop software. Of course, I take with a giant pinch of salt how true the Microsoft characterization really is, from a very pro-Microsoft author. He talks in highly glowing terms about how Microsoft is the best company in the world, and such. However, he hits on so many points that I saw first-hand were weak points at my former employer. While things have probably changed there since I left, I suspect that they are still very undisciplined -- cowboys, to use the author's terminology.The book can be viewed at a number of levels:1) An insight into what happens inside Microsoft software development. Specific, but still interesting to anyone in the software industry.2) A "How To" book on managing teams of software developers -- the description is very Microsoft-specific, referring to terminology and tools used there, but pulling back a little, the advice could easily be used very profitably in other environments.3) A "How To" book for individual contributors on how to think and act in order to make the appropriate choices in career development, in Microsoft or any other reasonably well-informed software development organization. Also, to find out how enlightened (or otherwise) your current employer might be.It is well worth reading, if you are a software engineer/developer, a software designer/architect, or software development manager, or plan to be in any of these roles. It describes so many of the things you will have to deal with in any software development organization, not only in Microsoft. In fact, if you pull back a little bit further, much of the sage advice given is applicable to lots of different organizations, even outside of software development.Some points:The author is continually emphasizing -- quite correctly -- how it's critical for the software engineers and managers, et. al. to ensure that the customer has a delightful experience (the currently fashionable expression). That does not jibe with my experience of Microsoft products, which continue to annoy the heck out of me, from operating systems (Windows) which require me to continually update them to keep them working properly to the point where I spend more time doing that than real work, to installable products that have a less than "delightful" install experience.Towards the end of the book, the author compares Microsoft with Google and Apple, and predicts that Microsoft will beat them over time with continually improved products. Well, Apple is now a truly dominant player in the computer market, having been extremely successful designing and marketing its iPhone, iPod, iPad, and its various Mac computers. It is very clear that they have been far more successful with "delighting" customers than has Microsoft. His take on Google is also that it will fail w.r.t. Microsoft, but his arguments didn't convince me, and seemed to be overly Microsoft-centric. Things have moved on since the book was written, and I suspect his conclusions haven't born out. How they will continue is anyone's guess.Not an easy read, but recommended!==== Update, March 6, 2012 =====It just happened that the very next book I read after this one was Steven Johnson's "Where Good Ideas Come From: The Natural History of Innovation" Where Good Ideas Come From: The Natural History of Innovation. I was immediately struck by the difference in approach towards (and definition of) Innovation between Johnson's book and this one. I think that Eric Brechner would do well to read Johnson's book, to see the difference in approach to "Innovation" at Microsoft (at least what he describes), and that of Johnson's approach. Rather than elucidate this in more detail, I leave it to the reader (and Mr. Brechner) to do the necessary reading. Johnson's book gives a far more convincing argument for innovation at Google and Apple than does Mr. Brechner at Microsoft.

Eric Bechner's I. M Wright's "Hard Code:" A Decade of Hard Learned Lessons from Microsft is one of the three books that I read over my vacation. In the interest of full discloser this review is written for O'Reilly's Blogger Review program and this is a only a striaght review of the text; I will be looking at some of the ideas in the book in greater detail in later posts.Overall the book is great and is applicable to pretty much any software developer of any level and I especially feel that the book should be read by students who are interested in working in a large software development firm or the IT department of a large corporation.However, readers of the text should approach it with the understanding that they are not reading this text to learn how to develop software, but rather to learn how to navigate in the software development industry; i.e. you will not read anything about the intricasies of .NET, C#, or C++ in this book, but you will learn how to effectively interface with managers and co-workers.There are parts of the book of course that are very particular to Microsoft, but these sections are few and far between and still provide an interesting read and many of the lessons from the Redmond specific chapters can be applied to many other large organizations. This is a must read for anyone interested in advancing their software development career in a corporate environment or if you are just interested in seeing how software development works in large companies.
