EXCERPT:  Chapter 1The steamy mist parted as I made my way to the mirror.The question was vibrating in my mind as I moved closer and closer to the mirror causing emotions to stir, a mixture of dread and anticipation churning inside my stomach just like the haze that was swirling around me. I could smell the sweet scent of citrus floating in the air as I saw my form appear in the mirror. I was a stranger looking back at me. I took a deep breath letting the refreshing scent fill my lungs hoping that the scent would wash away my darkness. I swallowed before slowly letting my breath out and asking the question - Who am I? The steam from the shower surrounded me touching my skin like a forgotten kiss. I continued to stare into the dark pupils that were glaring back at me, my long brown hair hanging in damp strands around my oval face. I moved closer to the   mirror hoping that if I stared long enough I would see that the answer was always there.I just needed to look a little deeper, a little harder.  I took another deep breath before asking the question again. "Who am I?" This time desperation was in my voice. Blank almost lifeless eyes continued to look back at me. I had to wonder if they were mocking me.  I looked deeper into the eyes patiently waiting for the answer to explode like a series of fireworks. Yet every morning it was the same - silence.  The only sound was my breathing, steady at first but soon increasing with the hope that today might be the day.  Who was that person staring back at me? The question was always swirling in my mind sometimes making me dizzy, most of the time the question was just an endless hum.  A pit of disappointment in the center of my heart expanded. Why do I continue with this sad ritual I thought?   I pushed myself away from the mirror with a heavy sigh thinking that maybe tomorrow I would get an answer. I dragged myself back to the bedroom my shoulders slumped and my heart heavy. I slide my body back into the security of my bed pulling the covers over my head to block out the morning light that was trying to break through letting me know that it was the start of a new day. Maybe if I sank deeper into my covers I could escape the loneliness and guilt that surrounded me.  The one person who could give me some glimmer of an answer to my question was gone. I cried myself back to sleep knowing that she would never return.

This is a touching story about a lonely guilt-ridden young woman who cannot get beyond the death of her mother and who is troubled by the existential question of "who am I."She is befriended by three strangers who become part of her life and try to pull her out of herself and back into the happiness and confidence that she has lost with her mother's passing.The twist at the end is what makes this story truly unique. For every lost and lonely soul, there must be someone who reaches out in love and friendship to bring that person home.

This is an interesting read and I enjoyed it far more than I expected, knowing that it is targeted for teenage females. I found the imagery and intrigue tended to draw me into the story, keeping me interested and ensuring I had to pick it up the next chance I found to continue. The emotional development of the story is very well done and you will find yourself experiencing the challenges of loss and bewilderment along with the main character. The cover picture is indeed as intriguing as the story.

This book was recommended by a friend so I gave it a try. While the subject matter and point of view would not be something that would normally interest me, I found the book to be inviting. It kept my interest throughout and the writing style easy to follow. The twist near the end was good as I didn’t see that coming and I enjoyed how the author tied it all together. Certainly gives one perspective regarding interpersonal thoughts. I enjoyed the book as a casual read but can see how others might look deeper into it, especially when dealing with personal loss.

This novel captures the emotional outcry of a young woman who because of losses feels "splintered" spiritually and emotionally. This book is both personal because it is a self reflection and interpersonal because the reader becomes an integral part of the emotions that are captured by the author.

This debut author is an inspiration to all who have a story to tell. The main character grapples with a serious question (Who am I?) that is skillfully balanced with humor. I would especially recommend this book to any teacher who questions the impact he/she has on a student. Profesor H. is a fascinating character who shows what can happen when we demonstrate to someone that she has potential. Walking with the main character as she recognizes her own potential is a literary treat.

Laura captures how women think - the multi-dimensions of thought that go through our heads. How our past impacts our thoughts and the meaning we put on past events and how that plays out in our everyday lives. I loved the self discovery of the main character Kat and had to giggle at some of the internal dialog Kat had in her head! This book was delightful and makes you realize we all have these internal dialogs in our head and sometimes it takes good friends to help see a fresh prospective!

This is a great book that has lots of very relatable thoughts we all have and valuable lessons to learn. If we change the way we look at things, the things we look at will change. Hats Off to Laura Kelly!! Well done. You had me hooked from the get go. Write On!!! Can't wait to read the next one.

I really enjoyed this book. I felt so many emotions while reading and it kept me coming back for more- I needed to know what happened. The story was unexpected, and I am so glad it was!

I absolutely love the quality of this book, it is well done, absolutely beautiful, amazing collection of these classic books! So excited to have them, read them and share them with others! It show cases her art and stories perfectly! I will include pictures, also if anyone likes history, I recommend listening to The History Chicks podcast on the life of Beatrix Potter, knowing about her life, her talent in art, and her love for animals among other things adds so much depth to these stories! I am not even kidding! The podcast isn't boring at all it's funny and interesting and made me love these stories all the more! Excited to have this beautiful edition to pass down to my children, and for a good price! Arrived on time as well, brand new, no damage!! Extremely Happy!!

For Beatrix Potter lovers, this book is a must. It has all the stories, with excellent reproductions of her original illustrations. There also are little prefaces that tell something about each particular stories publication. The quality of the paper, binding, etc. is first class.I read these stories to my children when they were little and look forward to reading them to my little grandson when he is old enough.

This is a beautiful series but had no number 7 and two number 11's. It was a gift to a grandchild shipped overseas so it was too difficult to return it.

We always borrow the single-book version from the library. They're in high demand so I decided to buy the full version. I was fully aware of the difference in format, but I was still a bit dismayed. The trouble is the suspense is gone with this format. Your kids will keep looking to the other pics further on in the story. I suggest you get this only after you've read many, or all, of the books, and just want to re-read for the pleasure of it. Or if (like me) you can't afford the boxed version yet. I do plan on getting the boxed set as a holiday present later this year. But I wanted to get this now. My kids are always asking to read their favorite stories. And I use this as a handy reference for homeschool copywork.

The Amazon Kindle version is miserable to read. The pictures are too small and the text is off with the pictures. Just buy this one in print.

If you're human you will love reading the quintessential children's stories by Beatrix Potter. In fact, if you are a grandparent you will love reading them even more. Every child should have her collection to save for their children. My grandchildren love this little library and believe it or not they take a book out then return it to its box. I think they are quite proud to own those 23 volumes of books exactly the right size for small hands. The art work is spectacular in this set. Let's face it children read not just for the story but the artwork too. I love all those little tales.

I was worried after reading some comments and reviews here on Amazon about these books, but the set I bought for my daughter is beautiful! We haven't made it through all of the books yet, but the ten we have read are perfect. Very detailed illustrations, perfect coloring, no fading or other issues that some people have had with these books. Very pleased.

I used to read these as a child and now that I have my own daughter i can't wait to read this to her. Beautiful book!

About the Author

John Houde, BS., DABC, is a board certified, twenty-five year veteran criminalist and the author of over twenty articles on the subject of forensic science. His articles have appeared in such publications as The California Narcotic Officer and the Journal of Forensic Sciences. For more than two decades he has acted as art director/publisher of the CACNews, the official journal of the California Association of Criminalists, representing over 650 criminalists worldwide. John has spent much of his career educating juries, investigators and attorneys in various topics of forensic science. His specialty areas include the analysis of narcotics, trace and fire debris evidence. John lives in Washington state with his wife, Donna.

Even though I thoroughly enjoyed the pictures, photographs, detail, and lay out of the book...I think I expected more than what I actually got. I've been interested in forensic science since medical school, and have read quite a few books. This one was fun, but it became less interesting and more preachy toward the end. I skimmed through the last part of the book, especially on the author's concerns over whether the public was adversely influenced by the OJ trial and the fiasco involved there. If I remember rightly, it was more the stupidity of the LAPD rather than the mistakes of the labs that stood out in everyone's mind. It is true that the FBI lab has come under more fire lately for mistakes, as should other labs if they do not do their job right. Lab work, whether for medical reasons or criminalists, can literally mean life-or-death, and it would be foolish to allow incompetence in either areas to flourish.For those just beginning to be interested in this field, especially those who think they may want to do this as their life's work, this is a good book for them to read. Be aware that the tests for DNA and other stuff is changing constantly, so what was written in the book, will now have changed...the field of Northern blotting, PCR, and other medical testing of blood components and DNA is changing about every six months, with new technology and more accurate methods of detection. "Crime Lab: A Guide for Nonscientists" by John Houde, ISBN 0-965-8286-2-X (HC), Calico Press 1999 - is a 205 page treatise by seasoned writer (20 articles) and publisher of quarterly CACNews. It is a superbly written and well illustrated (130) guide to understanding the basic principles utilized by criminalists in their forensic forays into known or suspected crime investigations. In 12 chapters Houde provides a brief history of forensics, depicts a crime scene (murder, assault, break-in, attempted arson) which is used as a ploy to submerge the reader into the probe as the investigation begins, describes encompassing the crime scene and how to record, photograph and analyze everything - from blood, saliva, sweat, vaginal secretions, pubic and body hair, animal and carpet fibers, and matching of probable murder weapons using well explained modern scientific devices including GC/MS, IR, SEM, polarizing microscopy, special tissue stains, ascertaining RI of glass, and details on collection, preservation and chain of custody of gathered evidences. They don't get any better.

I am using this for my class and it is really awesome. It teaches you by taking you through a crime that has occurred. Never encountered a teaching book like this that teaches techniques as you go and actually helps you apply it to assignments.

First, I'll say that this book explains things relatively well periodically throughout (so long as it's providing some kind of step-by-step information). I was excited about the price, too, because textbooks are often priced so unreasonably.That said, I purchased the Kindle version of this book for a class, because it was the required text. I got through about five pages in and realized that this is a terribly written book. It's like reading a crime scene seizure. It leaps from subject to subject and case to case like some kind of forensic mad libs. The icing on the cake was that when I was trying to copy and paste from the book into a word document to separate the nonsense from the information I actually need, I was told in an error message that I'd "reached the copy limit set by the publisher".Dude. I bought the book, and I am having to put labor in to weed through the godawful writing, and now I can't even do that. And for anyone who is thinking "it's because they don't want you to copy and paste the whole book and steal it and give it to your friends" or whatever, it's important that you know that anyone who tries to bring this book into your life is NOT your friend.

Cheap and a very good alternative for hardcopy book. It does the job. I love it.
