I try to be very fair to business books, but I didn't even finish reading this one because it was so elementary and ridiculous. I almost vomited after reading the words "execute" and "execution" a hundred times in the first chapter. This is one of many books written by formerly successful business people who feel the need (for posterity and/or outright arrogance) to take a five-page concept and spread it out over a few hundred pages. If you can master this simple principle, you don't need to read this book: Once you have a great plan or idea, you need to implement it effectively. To not effectively implement your great plan or idea, is a waste of a good plan or idea. That's it folks. The rest of this book is double-talk and business "war stories". The rest of the book is so pointless, you'd be better off spending the time with your family, or reading a different book.

This is severely dated at this point, and their knowledge of how IBM was run under Sam Palmisano is woefully incorrect. If you can ignore the first 3rd of the book, the other two thirds focusing on strategy and people processes are great. They all have to be in sync to move forward, but gone are the days of the line manager being pushed down from above to make all the decisions, instead it is up to the players to make the decisions.

For the Christmas Holidays, as we were packing the ski stuff from the basement before we left to VT, I chanced upon some books lying there, and noticed the one titled 'Execution,' by Larry Bossidy and Ram Charan which I had bought almost 8 years ago but never got around to reading it. On a whim, I decided to take it with me and ended up reading it through these holidays.A quick caveat to put aside. I do wish folks would not use company names as examples in books. The original one of these, "In Search of Excellence" by Tom Peters did that. So did Jim Collins in "Good to Great". And this book does it too. What happens is that the authors use some company as an example to cite either a good or a bad practice. And a decade has passed and things have changed (perhaps 180 degrees). And that induces a chuckle in addition to both dating the book and casting doubt on the claim. However, at least for this book, 'Execution', the above is only a caveat, since I found the book quite meaningful. The reason I perhaps did not read it when I first bought it many years ago is that it felt genuinely elementary. I was at the peak of my strategy work and when you are working on projects that are either reshaping a company or positioning oneself in new markets, the discipline of execution seems not only boring, but downright waste of time (not the importance of it mind you, but rather spending time thinking or reading about it). However, now that I have moved on from the strategy function myself and am in a line management role with accountability for business results and accountability for a team and partner-relationships to deliver those results, I view this book in an entirely new light! To share a personal reaction as I read this book ( a feeling I have not had since when I sat for my twelfth grade board examination!) - when I thought about implementing the ideas that Larry and Ram were talking about in their book on Tuesday morning Jan 2nd when I return to work, my stomach tightens into a knot! The level of sustained focus, discipline, follow through, attention to detail they expect in execution is non-trivial to say the least. Again, conceptually easy to grasp; but quite daunting if one thinks about putting them into real practice on a sustained basis throughout an organization!Very briefly, they touch upon the strategic, people and operational processes as three core processes that are building blocks for execution and show how the three are related to each other. And through their experience and examples demonstrate how to implement each of these effectively. One particular insight that I liked that Larry made in particular was, 'just because an executive is good in her current job, does not mean she is ready or capable for the next'. Which is similar to what our Chairman says, "do the job you have been assigned, not your previous one."Of course with a background in engineering (and manufacturing to boot), this whole notion of execution and organizing to execute is not alien to me at all. And in reality, my immersion for a long time in strategic work was what I needed to be more lithe in my thinking. However executing by one self or with a small team in a localized way on a specific deterministic engineering problem is one challenge. But to do the same with large revenues and large teams at stake and working through your teams through other teams with high week-to-week dependence on market conditions is another challenge. This timely book was very worthwhile spending time with. Dated examples notwithstanding, one of the more immediately useful and relevant books in the business genre that I have read in a long time.

Bossidy and Charan dive into the critical gap of getting things done in this management classic. Focused on execution, the authors discuss the critical components for leadership within an execution/get stuff done environment. Pointing out the failures of hands off management, ivory tower thinking and micromanagement, the emphasis is on those critical elements that combine the what needs to be done and who needs to do it to execute on a business strategy or operational plan. The critical linking of strategy, operations and people is the role of the business leader, and in order to accomplish that critical mission, the leader must be meaningfully involved in those three elements - not micromanaging them, but leading them to efficient execution. The leader's most important job is the selection and appraising of the people in the organization, and this element should consume the bulk of their efforts and should never be delegated. The leader must embrace this role and thrive in it to ensure proper execution of the strategy and operations. The combination of people and strategy lead to an operating plan, in which the execution takes place. This plan needs to be realistic, ambitious, resourced, specific and accountable. The authors note that this piece is often the art that falls short - where the operating plan is divorced from the strategy and people - and the execution suffers. The book has critical questions and suggestions for the leader, and provides a platform for thought that is focused on getting things done rather than just the what and who theory of planning. An important read.

Projects fail on execution.Execution is the difference between success and just trying.Typically, companies and individuals don't know how to execute.A well-executed book about execution. Loved it.

A work about who we are and who we may become. For this reader there were a number of suprising moments and very useful "reveals" about life influences and physological realities. There are certainly others that, at the time of reading were outside my current comprehension. There was one personal "ah-ha!" moment for me and there might be for another reader as well. Books like this have the potential to be life-changing. This one is very much worth a read.

I loved this book. I am a practicing UU Buddhist who also includes my Native American and Celtic heritages, so I'm a mess with trying to understand how I "should" be. But, in regard to this memoir, I too followed the path as it appeared to me and as I thought I should go, and then I realized how much I didn't like it. I too don't enjoy public speaking, even though I can do it and I can do it well. I simply don't want to do it anymore. I loved how the author bared it all and was blunt about it. This book is a keeper and a sharer for me. Somewhere along the line, as I share it with people who can relate, it will get lost or I will forget who I loaned it to. However, I will definitely buy it again. Some books are like that -- they speak to my heart, but, at times, I have to remind myself of what/where/who my heart is. I then go to my bookshelf and find it.

I just love this book; it's so honest and full of wisdom and encouraging - it was all good things to me and I am really grateful to Mary for baring her soul and doing the work that is this book. I rarely buy books, as I am frugal and a proud library patron, but I immediately purchased a copy here to be able to highlight the many gems that are in this book. She feels like a mentor to her readers. Thank-you Mary!!!

Thoughtful, open memoir of author's emotional crisis reaction to fame and recognition after successful books. Her family background left her with a need/drive to be responsible for others' needs/requests. She retells her period of shutting down external noise and learning to quiet her usually overactive 'monkey mind'. Since reading I have found myself recalling her descriptions of finding peaceful moments. This isn't your usual self help tome but I found it helpful.

Mary Pipher has been one of my favor authors for some time now. I like her approach to life, This book has its moments. Also try her Letters to a Young Therapist for more of her heart touching accounts of personal growth.

This book reads like a memoir and it penetrates your heart and speaks to you regardless of your cultural background. You will see that our pain and our joys are universal, and you get to see life through a vantage point of a very compassionate therapist. Mary Pipher is simple yet elegant and intellectual, but it is her openness and deep love that captures you. She shares with the readers her sufferings and her growth through her journey of serving others. She writes about her fame after her success with her previous books, and how the book tours and travels took away from her essence. She talks about how she was able to come out of the depression and finding her peace. This book made me cry and laugh, but most importantly I was amazed by how she is speaking to my heart. I met Mary Pipher recently in a conference and fell in love with her integrity and simpleness. I highly recommend this book to both therapists and non-therapists.

Good writing, philosophical thinking. Had to read it in bits and pieces in order to let it digest fully. Recommend this.

thank you

I am currently working on JSR168 (java portlets) it has helped in some ways. Still doesn't have a good enough description for setting up your environment. If you are looking for a book with examples and some explanation its not a bad book to check out.

The Java portlet API is one of the less known and actively studied by developers due to the absence of a stable, well documented reference implementation. So a good book on the subjct would be sorely needed but this text is not up to the challenge. It is written by a couple geeks with clearly no inclination or talent for teaching who manage to express even the simplest concept in complicated ways. That maybe could be forgiven, but they also do not seem to have a really deep understanding of the subject. For all but the most general notions and , especially important, for all the configuration , intallation and deployment nuisances you are left on your own. We need a good book covering IN DETAIL pluto and especially Jetspeed 2. Don't waste you money with this mock up of a book, wait for a better title.

Portals are becoming more popular as companies are looking for a single web-based entry point into their various applications. Java provides a standard portal model with JSR 168. This book is a thorough introduction into JSR 168 that will help get portal developers up to speed into this relatively new specification. The book starts with an excellent introduction into developing portlets. The first seven chapters cover all the details of developing portlets. Response and request objects are covered in detail. The portlet life cycle is clearly explained. Deployment descriptors are discussed. Integrating with Servlets and JSPs is described. The remainder of the book covers more advanced topics. Anyone working with a portal knows the problems with providing single sign-on to multiple applications. The authors discuss this issue giving several examples. The authors cover syndication, searching, personalization, web services, content management, and more.My only complaint with the book is that it uses the Apache Pluto portal, which is not in final release yet. Pluto is an open source portal but it is complicated to distribute content to it (you are forced to use Maven). When the book explains how to distribute portlets to Pluto it gets a little confusing because the authors need to explain multiple configuration files, some of which are exclusive to Pluto. Other than this one problem, the book gives a solid introduction to developing a portal providing detailed information of both the basics and many advanced concepts. Clearly the authors understand portal development and know how to pass that information on to their readers.

Many companies have recognised the need for portals to provide an easy way for users to get at corporate information, in a way controlled by the company. Inevitably, there has been a writing of APIs to regularise what a portal is. Here, our authors give this, in the context of J2EE and the latest Java. The book explains how to use the Java Portal API. It shows a portal as a container of portlets. Each portlet is a wrapper around some single coherent function. At least, that is the ideal! You will be greatly eased in understanding what is offered if you have already written Java Servlets and JSPs. The Portal API and its recommended usage were deliberately written to mimic those, as much as possible. There is really nothing difficult here.Plus, put simply, if you can understand Servlets and JSPs, it strongly behooves you to upgrade your skill set and learn about portals. You have to keep moving forward. If only because there are programmers in India (and elsewhere) actively commoditising your current skill set. Just a few steps behind you. So perhaps try this book and keep going.

This should not be your first book on computers. It's not a beginners guide to FrontPage or something like that. On the other hand, if you've been assigned a portal project or are wanting to upgrade your skills at a professional level, this just may well be the book for you. This book presumes that you have some level of expertise at the Java Servlet level. That means that Java, Java Server Pages, Apache/Pluto, shouldn't be totally unknown to you. In fact, you should have Pluto running on you machine when you start.Having said that, then this book provides an excellent and clear introduction to portals. It further assumes that you may have to integrate your existing application (Oh wouldn't it be nice to start clean.) into a portal environment and discusses how to do this at length. If portals are your new thing, you won't go wrong by starting here.

Before reading "The Year The Gypsies Came" by Linzi Glass I read all the glowing reviews with a skeptic's eye. Now that I have just completed this book let me rush to join the chorus who sing its praises. This intimate family story envelops the reader not only in the personal, but also in the larger story of Apartheid in South Africa. The novel becomes increasingly engaging as it unfolds. Especially compelling is the relationship between the young narrator, Emily, and the elderly Zulu night watchman with his wondrous tales filled with poetic wisdom. The impressive narrative is tightly woven and moves inexorably forward. Every word, phrase and sentence is there for a reason. How refreshing and unusual it is to find a book that is neither too long, nor hopelessly marred by excessive details.Linzi Glass' remarkable achievement is that through her lyrical prose she presents simultaneously the astonishing beauty of her native South Africa along with its correspondent sadness. Some of my best friends are my books. I often go back to a select few and reread passages that I have found to be particularly memorable. Surely "The Year The Gypsies Came" will join my group of special friends.

Set in South Africa in the early 1960's the story is about a dysfunctional family who play host to a family of displaced wanders. Beautifully written, the tale enfolds a rich carpet of characters and events that have a far-reaching affect on all involved.I was captivated with this book.

The Iris family lives in Johannesburg, Africa. Where you can "fall asleep with the faint roar of a lion or the laugh of a hyena coming across the lake." Their story takes place in the Spring of 1966 and is described through the eyes of the youngest member, twelve-year-old Emily. Other members of the family include mother Lily, father Bob and older sister Sarah.Emily has short dark hair and is a tomboy. She thinks dolls are boring and hates the colour pink. Her only friend in school is Cynthia Wright but her most important relationship is the one she has with her sister. She and Sarah are always compassionate to one another even with something as simple as a game of checkers.Bob comes home to let them know he ran into some 'gypsies' on one of his walks and they accepted his offer to park their trailer at the end of their estate. The Gypsies are made up of Jock and Peg Mallory and their two sons Streak and Otis. They aren't real gypsies but have travelled the continent in their trailer since before the boys were born. Jock supports his family as a wild life photographer. The boys immediately take a liking to the Iris girls spending any time they can with them outside of the girls' school.Another important character is sweet Buza, the night watchman/gate keeper. He is an elderly Zulu man and story teller who walks with a cane and tells stories to Emily when she comes to visit him in the watch house. He is her confidant and surrogate parent. Through him Linzi Glass laces short African tales which offer their own little morals within a few pages. One of my favourite was the story of Ma-We and the honey guide. Others include the phython story, the wolf story, the story of Rolihlahla and the story of two sisters, Yaphansi and Intombi. I would love to read more about Buza and his history. As the weeks pass Emily becomes stricken by the stories Streak shares with her about his family. Her own family doesn't look so bad after all. A growing fear murmurs inside her whenever she's around Jock. It isn't until one fearful night she realizes her fear was misdirected. But by then it's too late and her and Sarah's lives are changed forever. The use of simile is overbearing at times and some of the content is a little more mature than I would like for young adult readers. At the end is a helpful glossary of Afrikaans / Zulu words and Expressions. The Year of the Gypsies Came is Linzi Glass' first novel and she has created a compelling story with interesting characters. I couldn't help but care about them and I could literally feel the tension the author creates for Emily and Sarah when their parents argue. It's painful. The love Emily feels for Sarah and Buza is palpable. I was touched by their relationships. This book is worth reading for its sentiment and hint of African culture. Reviewed by M. E. Wood

Another book that I wanted to read after my high school librarian booktalked it.Set in South Africa during Apartheid, Emily's family is falling apart. Mother and Father rarely speak, and when they do it is just to argue. Mother is upset that Father isn't keeping her in the lifestyle that she imagined for herself, and Father is tired of Mother's browbeating. The only time that her parents seem to stop arguing is when other people stay at their compound. This time it's the gyspies. Not gypsies like one would imagine, her Father assures Emily. This is a wandering family from Australia. Jock, the nature photographer, wife Peg (with her omnipresent snake Opalina around her neck), and sons Otis and Streak. It's plain to see that Otis is simply not right in the head, and Streak is a bit of a wild one himself. Emily immediately takes to Streak, and sister Sarah is so kind and gentle that Otis' ways do not seem to bother her.The family's night watchman, Buza, has a bad feeling about these visitors. Emily spends her evenings with Buza, listening to his Zulu stories. He is the only person who can make Emily feel whole as her family splinters apart.***************This is a beautifully written tragedy. Emily is young enough that her emotions are raw and on the surface and Linzi Glass writes her voice perfectly. In fact there are no weak characters in this story. Each is integral, and everyone grows in some way.I have a bit of an interest in South Africa as a friend of mine lived there for several years, and I have recently aquired a South African penpal. However, I think that this is a book that will appeal to most fans of the written word. It is not for younger YAs as themes of infidelity, sexual abuse, and death are present. It is, however, wonderfully written and a pleasure (despite the pain) to read.

I had to read this for college. It was a good book for me though as I am in the web development business and it is important for me to understand some of the social media concepts out there. This book I have to say, however, feels very watered down for casual readers. I've been in the web business almost 10 years now, and I have to say that this is not the greatest book for someone that already has technical knowledge. It has many bare bone basic concepts about social media sites and feels like a "how to" guide for corporate head-honchos. The author of this text makes up a lot of their own terminology and key-concepts behind social media including the term "groundswell". Many of its concepts revolve around social media technology such as Twitter and Facebook. Social media can go out of fashion as quickly as it gained popularity. I wouldn't recommend a corporate business do everything this book says, although it has some good advice for those who are clueless about implementing their business in social media. This is an interesting read, but I'm not too crazy about it nor it's concepts. I have to question, how have the authors gained some of the knowledge they have and who are they to really set the standards for social media? It's a decent book and not many others out there are like it, but I think someone can write something better out there. Average book in general. Take what you can from it but don't believe everything it says in my professional opinion. 3/5

Update below my initial review.__________________________________Purchased this audible so I could listen to the book and prepare for class while commuting. Not even the full first chapter in I noticed that the dates and statistics seemed off - very off. (Maybe the mention of MySpace and MSN messenger should've been the first warning to stop.) The audible is dated - outdated by a few years worth of information. However! The rest of the content and core message are still there (albeit clumsily delivered, over simplified, and trying too hard to be modern and "cool" - Jui Jitsu, really?). Hopefully it stays that way for the rest of the book...So I don't have to go back to the old way of preparing for class - juggling the handle bar, a book or phone, and a jerking subway while in a human sandwich. But I'll have to revisit the actual text for the updated stats.Keep my $4.00 and put it to updating this audible...Update: I've read a good portion of this book now for a graduate course and I am not a fan. The book is very basic - so basic it doesn't feel like I took anything from the text that I didn't already know. While it does offer the framework for understanding the impact of the digital/internet/mobile age on businesses, I don't feel like it offers anything beyond that - only a framework. This book should be picked up by someone that hasn't already studied this subject matter - and honestly there are better written introductions. But its an easy read, it backs its text with statistics, the diagrams and tables are useful for getting a grasp on the subject matter, and it builds. I haven't finished the book yet but I do assume that as I continue the text will get "meatier" and offer more value. So I am bumping up my review to a 3-star. It isn't great, but it isn't the worst. Also the audible version does still vary slightly from the kindle version when it comes to statistics and dates - but the core message and text is still the same. Not my favorite audible voice actor either - but on 1.5x audio speed it's bearable.

"Groundswell" is a social trend where people use social technologies to get what they need.People use these technologies by:* Generating blogs, web content and podcasts.* Connecting in social networks and virtual worlds.* Collaborating in wikis and open source.* Reacting in forums, ratings and reviews.* Organizing content with tags.* Accelerating consumption with RSS and widgets. There are five main objectives (aligned with business functions) for participating in social technology such as Twitter:* Listening (Research) - mentions of our company* Talking (Marketing) - useful, helpful tweets* Energizing (Sales) - finding people who write about you and re-tweeting* Supporting (Support) - customer support* Embracing (Development) - get ideas on how to improve products "Don't bother setting up a Twitter account and tweeting links to your press releases--you won't get a whole lot of followers. Instead think about what you can offer that might get picked up and repeated by others." (Groundswell, page 203)There are different types of people using social technologies:* Creators - may create blogs, websites, etc.* Critics - participate in communities, blogs, commenting, etc.* Collectors - bookmark websites* Joiners - join communities e.g. Facebook* Spectators - just read* Inactives - don't use social media at allThis book uses current and relative case studies to prove its points. In summary, Groundswell recommends getting started with social technology because it's already happening whether you're participating in it or not. It's recommended to have a social strategy that starts with one of the above objectives and measures it. I recommend anyone who is using social media in their job to read this book.

I dated a great guy for over a year and suddenly he dropped off the face of the earth. Granted, it was a long distance relationship but we traveled a lot together and to me it was perfect. I had my own time yet always had something to look forward to by making the next plan to see each other. I made myself so available and able to go at any time, but by doing so put my own interests on hold and became less interesting and no longer a challenge. My heart was broken and I couldn't understand what had happened so of course I questioned and tried to reason that we were so good together. We didn't fight, we had lots af fun, did interesting things together, and sex was great. On and on and on.... I really saw myself in this book and it has helped me see that although I am a very independent and capable woman that I self sabatoged my relationship by giving up part of myself. This is a must read for woman who give too much!

I LOVED this book for many reasons!! As women, we are caretakers and nurturers. We are problem solvers and emotional beings. Gregg gets that and US! That is both refreshing and relieving. His book gave me an insight that I hadn’t found yet! Women, you will be astonished. This book will finally shed light on why you personally have attracted men that are players and time wasters. It will change your outlook on how to date and how to relate to men (and what they need and look for in a woman). This is not a book that puts men down in any way. It is a book that explains the different mind set of a man. It also helps women to understand their worth and how to be the best versions of themselves (pointers and all). I bought and sent a copy to my bestie! It’s time we understand what we deserve and how to get it! THANKS GREGG!

First off I'm not a big fan of this author; he's condescending and not particularly insightful. Also, this book is a rehash of his other book 'Who Holds the Cards Now?' which offers *some* decent but totally redundant advice, and both try to up-sell his other books and services throughout. I was looking for much more in-depth understanding into the male mind rather than the basics about men that this book literally skims through.I was also offended by the author's stereotype of single women as boring people who lie around in sweat clothes all day, are slaves to emotional outbursts, aren't a constant challenge to the 'prize men', and that they lack proper boundaries when they do actually manage to get a date. That's as insulting as it is ignorant. The chapter on the 5 mistakes women make that make men disappear -- OMG, SMH. Granted that there's truth to a certain extent. But the author makes no mention that there are many, many man-boys and players out there just looking for a short-term thrill, and they aren't always easy to recognize because they've got their game down to a T. Read another book -- or Natalie Lue's blog -- if you want more valuable, in-depth advice about dating and men, and how to recognize the men to stay away from in the first place.

I was with a man I thought was "the one". I made almost every mistake that is in this book & we broke up. He recently contacted me and is pursuing me again & I have started to take the advice that Gregg gives, instead of thinking like a woman. This book is so insightful. I finally recognize even though I am a "keeper" that I was making terrible mistakes because I was doing things a woman would do and my girlfriends would tell me to do. Not anymore! Man Mode! I feel like I have just won a prize learning all of this information. It's so simple yet, I never understood until now. I loved the book & can't wait to put it to use starting today!

Gregg is great!!! I thought I understood men before I read this book. I was raised in a loving home with two loving parents. I don't have Daddy Issues and I have had positive male models in my family from my grandfather, father, uncles, brother, and cousins. However, I had a failed marriage and other long term relationships that did not last. I always thought it was the guys fault. Clearly, there was nothing wrong with me. Lol. But, I came across this book with a catchy title and I decided to read this book. Of course, there were some things that I already knew, but there were some points that Gregg made that made me see where my decision-making in regards to men was flawed. Here are some things you should know:-The book is written as if you're having a conversation with Gregg. You should be able to finish it in a few hours.-As you read, Gregg offers readers two new, free books within the text. But, you have to read.-You can email Gregg directly ... AND HE'LL RESPOND IN LESS THAN 24 HOURS!!!

Wow, as an older woman going through a divorce on the road to healing after discovering I married a Narcissitic Sociopathic Sex Addict this book shows me a whole new approach to never falling in that pit of darkness again. It provides such a clear view of men and their world. Truly a roadmap to finding decent worthy male choices. Wish I'd had all this valuable male insight before hooking up with last fiasco.

This book is a must-read. Dating, relationships and being with a partner are major factors in our lives that should be treated with importance. As women, we don't understand the male psyche that is so very different from our own. Gregg offers honest insights to better help us understand the male psyche and shape perspective. This empowers us women to approach situations with an understanding of the male thought patterns for better results. It's a guide to translate the differences and act. While this book did not apply to me as well, as I was going through a breakup and not looking to date, I wanted to insight to the male mind. This book still offered that and plenty more so when I am ready to date, I've got the tools and insight. I liked it so much I came across his other books (how to win your ex back & who holds the cards now), which have been so valuable. If you are dating, this book is your weapon to empower yourself. Just read it - it does not take too much of your time or money and well worth it. You have nothing to lose and plenty to gain!

I have mixed feelings on this book. But overall, I highly recommend it.When I first heard of this book, I was really interested in reading it and pre-ordered it on Amazon – since I like to ready and study the history and development of technology and Silicon Valley. I read The One Device over the course of a few days. No doubt, this boo was released a week before the 10th anniversary of release of the first iPhone - Friday, June 29th, 2007, to generate interest and sales. If you want *just* a history of the development of the first iPhone, this book may not be for you – except for the last chapter. If you want to know more about what made the iPhone possible and everything that lead up to the iPhone in a historical context, then you’ll definitely want to read this book. I just felt that the book could have been organized with more about Apple than a lot of isolated chapters with some Apple and iPhone history sprinkled in, where the best chapter on the development of the iPhone was saved for last. These lines from the last chapter succinctly encapsulates the essence of the book and the development of the iPhone:“… The stars aligned. They also aligned with lithium-ion battery technology, and with the compacting of cameras. With the accretion of China’s skilled labor force, and the surfeit of cheaper metals around the world. The list goes on. “It’s not just a question of waking up one morning in 2006 and deciding that you’re going to build the iPhone; it’s a matter of making these nonintuitive investments and failed products and crazy experimentation – and being able to operate on this huge timescale … Most companies aren’t able to that. Apple almost wasn’t able to do that.”The One Device tells the story of the development of the iPhone – but much more so, the confluence of ideas and technologies over time that made the iPhone possible. The book starts off with Apple’s “Explore New Rich Interactions” (ENRI) group and initial experimentations of multi-touch before even thinking about the smartphone. Then a chapter into the history of the phone, electronic communications and the smartphone. Then on to a chapter (“Minephones”) on the sources of materials of smartphones. Then to Gorilla Glass. Then a chapter on the origins and work on multitouch over the decades. Then back to a chapter on Apple (“Prototyping”).Then back to the history of the battery and lithium battery and the origins of lithium. Then a chapter on Apple’s interest in the camera & image stabilization. Then a chapter back to the history of sensing motion (gyroscopes, GPS, accelerometers, etc). And onto a chapter on the ARM microprocessor (“Strong-ARMed”). Then a chapter on cellular network infrastructure. Then back to Apple (“Enter the iPhone”), describing Apple’s thinking on developing a mobile phone, as iPod was taking off. Then to a side-tracked chapter and history of Siri (along with voice recognition, and artificial intelligence). I say side-tracked, since the original iPhone didn’t have Siri – which came out in the Fall of 2011 with the release of the iPhone 4S.Then a chapter on Foxconn and the Chinese labor force that assembles the iPhone. The back to Apple on how secretive it is as well as its marketing prowess (“Sellphone”).Then back to China and description of the Chinese component ecosystem and aftermarket and black market for phones. Then finally the last chapter of the book – the last 50 pages or so (out of 380 pages) – “The One Device” - is the meat of what I was looking for – getting more deeply into the details (as much as one could to a general reading audience).Overall, I would describe The One Device as a book version of the history of the smartphone analogous to the 1996 three hour PBS television documentary about the PC industry titled, “Triumph of the Nerds” – which I often say, is the best three hours of television, or at least documentary television, ever made. If you’re really interested in the history of what made the iPhone possible, this is terrific primer. Some other thoughts – this book really also looks at the cost of the iPhone, smartphone and consumer electronics in general – the mining material & labor cost, the factory worker & cellular tower worker cost, and the environmental cost. And finally, the cost to the Apple employees who gave their lives for the iPhone:As stated in the book, “His doctor, he says, gave him an ultimatum. Do these two things or risk dying – lose weight and quit [Apple]. Thirty-six people I worked with at Apple have died,” he says. “it is intense.”That intensity is also likely the reason that the team that built the iPhone has since scattered to the winds. As of 2017, besides Jony Ive, none of the executive staff at Apple was seriously involved in creating the iPhone.”

Other Silicon Valley observers have written about the development of the iPhone—but it's unlikely that anyone else has delved as deeply into the subject as Brian Merchant . . . or will ever do so in the future, for that matter. Merchant's brilliant new book, The One Device: The Secret History of the iPhone, tells the tale from the mining of the minerals from which the phone is crafted to the oppressive working conditions in Apple's Chinese manufacturing plants and the scavengers at Third World dumps where discarded iPhones are sometimes now found. Those topics bookend the story, which largely consists of interviews with some of the hundreds of people who played a hand in the phone's development.Steve Jobs didn't invent the iPhoneIf you have the impression that Steve Jobs invented the iPhone and is largely responsible for its success, The One Device will quickly disabuse you of that misconception. Without question, Jobs was hugely influential in the project: his obsessive attention to detail, his passion for secrecy, and his genius at marketing all contributed in major ways to the ultimate runaway success of the product. However, not only was the iPhone not Jobs' idea—he actively resisted pursuing the project for several years. (A team of key staff members worked in secret in defiance of his refusal to authorize the work. Their meetings began before the turn of the century. The first iPhone was released in June 2007.) Jobs' insistence on secrecy contributed to the buzz that surrounded the phone in the months leading up to its release, but during the many years that Apple devoted to designing the iPhone, that same paranoid obsession with secrecy impeded the project's progress by compartmentalizing the staff. "Of all the complaints about working at Apple . . .," Merchant writes, "its secrecy was at the top of the list—engineers and designers found it set up unnecessary divisions between employees who might otherwise have collaborated." And Jobs' notoriously volcanic temper and his sometimes abusive treatment of employees may have forced many of them to work longer and harder on the phone than otherwise would have been the case. But it's difficult to believe that morale wouldn't have suffered as a result—and I know from decades of experience as an employer that low morale takes a toll on productivity. As Merchant makes clear, "The story of the iPhone starts . . . not with Steve Jobs or a grand plan to revolutionize phones, but with a misfit crew of software designers and hardware hackers tinkering with the next evolutionary step in human-computer symbiosis." And a truly fascinating tale it is. Ultimately, hundreds of people, not just at Apple but at key suppliers such as Corning and Samsung as well, made key contributions to the success of the iPhone. Merchant does his best to identify them by name and interview them.A century of antecedentsOne of the strengths of Merchant's account is the thoroughness with which he studied the history of technology. In doing so, for example, he learned that "[v]isions of iPhone-like devices can be traced back to the late 1800s." A Finnish inventor "successfully file a patent for what appears to be the first truly mobile phone"—in 1917. And "[b]y 1994, Frank Canova had helped IBM not just invent but bring to market a smart-phone that anticipated most of the core functions of the iPhone." Thirteen years before Apple's product announcement! The world's most profitable product?Merchant frequently refers to the iPhone as "the world's most profitable product." For one thing, it didn't start out that way. Initial sales of the phone were disappointing. Jobs had steadfastly refused to let outside developers supply apps to run on the iPhone. Only when he relented at last and allowed the opening of the App Store did sales explode upwards—and explode they did. Certainly, the profits Apple realizes from the phone are now massive, and it accounts for two-thirds of the company's revenue. Where else might Apple's cash hoard of more than $250 billion have come from? But is it the world's most profitable product? That strikes me as hyperbole. Like other journalists, Merchant clearly fell prey to the fallacy that only huge corporations matter. Although Time lists the iPhone as #1 on its list, the magazine qualifies that claim with the statement that it is "one of the world’s most profitable products." And Merchant's extravagant use of language doesn't stop with his assertion about the phone's profitability. For example, "The iPhone might actually be the pinnacle product  of all of capitalism to this point." Later, he adds, "The iPhone isn't just a tool; it's the foundational instrument of modern life." Really? As of last year, iPhone sales passed one billion units. But there are more than 7.4 billion people on the planet.

I was really looking forward to reading The One Device(on that later) My takeaways are a person never realized how many people had something to do with the making of the iPhone. We give the credit to Steve Jobs and he deserves it with his vision, leadership and most of all his blessings-the iconic iPhone would have never been build. And yet, he fought and had to be persuaded to build a phone, open the App Store, have iTunes in windows and that was not easy as he was the boss, a jerk and a force of nature. The scope of hands that contributed to the iPhone is incredible from the miners in Chille getting the raw material for the lithium batteries, to the hands of brilliant engineers and designers at Apple, to all the past inventions notably multitouch,to WiFi, to chips and so on without them the iPhones will have not been possible. Is an incredible read but my disappointment was the writer Merchant writing style-it wasn't easy to read , he goes way to deep into the weeds(way too much details ) it almost feels like a textbook. I like nonfiction books to feel like fiction, a story with plots, with transition and connecting points and even a little cliff hangers. At the end I rushed it to finish the book. That's not to say I didn't like it and I learned a lot about the iPhone. One last note I am Die-Hard Apple fan but Apple has become the greedy and sometimes heartless corporation(we all detest) with profits margin for iPhone at 40-70% and suicide factory in China and Apple workers in stores barely making above minimum wages is something I hope changes. On looking forward to reading it, the textbook style disappointed me but nevertheless I recommend it especially if you love the iPhone.
