The author's opinion is that religion has not been the cause of wars, choosing to ignore the history of Islam and that of Christianity over two millenia. The author also is of the opinion that only by having a ruling class that took advantage of the farmers or serfs that it was possible to have the leisure time to pursue the arts and sciences and so advance human kind.I read it with ever fading hope to find something credible and of value but her polemics lead nowhere. I may as well spent my time reading the collected works of George W Bush.

I found this to be a good overview of current academic thinking of how the Bible came to be written, compiled and interpreted through the ages. I would have liked a bit more of the nuts and bolts - how the choices were made to include certain gospels and epistles and not others, how the Catholic Bible differs; the impact of translations and printing, etc. There is some of this, but I expected more. Instead, the book focuses mostly on how people read and understood the text in different periods. This is of course the author's prerogative, and Ms. Armstrong delivers a very readable and informative book.

I have always loved Karen Armstrong's writing, and I thought I had all her books, both hard copy and Kindle versions. I was surprised I did not have this one when I saw a copy on a friend's table. So, of course, I came to Amazon.I am SO grateful I discovered this one. It was very helpful to me in sorting out issues related to our Progressive Christian study group. As an interfaith minister, I am excited about her suggestion in the epilogue for finding a common exegete. The rest of the book I highlighted way too much, so as I go back to study, I'll reduce to major highlights.If you're curious about how to take the Bible and wonder what the options are, I recommend this book. It would make an excellent text for a class for ordinary people who find the academic approach to the subject way too daunting.

This book reads like the watered down version of someone's doctoral dissertation. I could have done with less academic language. Also, I only read a third because it was becoming never ending. I felt as though I was reading a list of facts bound together with verbiage. A lighter touch would have resulted in a more enjoyable read. However, if I were looking for source material on the subject, this book provides lots of references that would be useful.A little less on the facts and a little more on the story telling would have improved the book. Or, maybe I'm not the target audience for this book.

This is a thorough discussion of Bible history that traces its roots from centuries before the birth of Christ. I can't verify the accuracy but the book is full of footnotes and other references. It's not easy reading, but it does a fine job of explaining the various theories and controversies surrounding the authorship and evolution of the Bible. Well worth reading as long as you don't approach the book with a religious bias and keep an open mind.

This book was Ok. Lot's of specifics about each book of the bible, sects, personalities. I was kind of expecting more history of how it all came down to us. For somebody interested in the way this author tells the story, it's five stars. It is certainly extremely well researched. This author is undoubtedly and authority on this subject. She brings fact after fact to bear, and at times overwhelms with information about origins of each book. I appreciates the way she treats Jesus as exactly what he was, a historical figure who was propelled to be god in legend. Moses? Burning bush? Well, the beginning of the book explains how myths took hold of peoples' minds when they craved explanations.

Very smart if a little dense. Armstrong is so concerned about putting every last aspect of her research in, that you can get lost in the weeds. Great, great story though and so important in these days of folks turning to this book as a proof to understand where it actually came from. Here, one gets a view not only of the Bible as world literature, but also the impact on the teachings by those impacted by it.

This is an eye opener! It is written in a historical manner. The reading is a challenge because I am not familiar with ancient, Jewish or European history. However I have and am learning a lot about how interpretations of the Bible have changed over time. The first part deals with the old testament and ends with today and interpretation of the new testament. It does not advocate one religion over another as this is about the Bible.

A worthwhile read for any one seeking a better understanding of the Bible. The author carries the reader through an examination of how the Bible came to its present form and suggests a new approach of study to assist in the reconciliation of modern religious and personal conflict. This work was a true revelation to me.

Famed worldwide for giving graphic definition to the postwar age, Saul Steinberg (1914–1999) had one of the most remarkable careers in American art. While renowned for the covers and drawings that appeared in The New Yorker for nearly six decades, he was equally acclaimed for the drawings, paintings, prints, collages, and sculptures he exhibited internationally in galleries and museums. He published nineteen books in his lifetime, including The Art of Living, The New World, and The Discovery of America.Nicholson Baker is the author of ten novels and six works of nonfiction, including A Box of Matches and The Anthologist, both New York Times Notable Books of the Year, and Double Fold, which won a National Book Critics Circle Award.  His work has appeared in The New Yorker, Harper’s, and The New York Review of Books. The Labyrinth is a MASTERPIECE!!! One of the great picture books of the 20th Century!! Saul Steinberg collected his drawings like a poet collects his poetry, and the result is a genre for the forward thinking. Steinberg’s The Labyrinth is not a traditional graphic novel, nor is it a monograph. Instead, it is a collection of thoughts and humorous observations that inform the reader in a clear and concise visual exercise. It may come off as pretentious at first glance, but it is truly a feast for the eyes that will last for years to come...that’s why it is back in print ;-)

I ordered the book based on an article in the Dec 23 Sunday Washington Post titled: An exercise manual to train our eyes to look at art. Well, I found the book full of little but scrawl without much meaning. I failed to "get" what the artist was trying to say. Oh, there was an occasional item that was a bit clever (maybe 6 or so in its 251 pages, but I don't recommend the book for anyone...unless you have a friend who is a budding artist but not sure if he/she has talent. You could show him/her the book as an example of someone who was apparently very successful despite a lack of talent.

I am a big fan of Steinberg’s art. I have two pieces of his art. So, I had to have a book about him

I don’t use the word ‘cute’ often, but in this case, I cannot think of a more apt description.It is impossible not to like the comical anecdotes about grumpy poodles, the ‘sweet-N-Sour’ old lady with the poodle print clothes, cute puppies and lazy cats. This is a ‘feel good’ book with happy endings for most of the furry patients, and that’s a relief. The book is well written, and the characters, including the veterinary staff and the fussy pets owners, are interesting and relatable. The author has managed to describe the real life of a vet as well as the difficulties of diagnosing and treating patients who cannot describe their own symptoms, and relying on owners’ judgment of the ‘weird’ or ‘abnormal’ behavior of the pet.On the downside, the book is especially wonderful for those who are interested in becoming veterinary doctors themselves, or who are ardent animal lovers. Personally, for someone like me, the book did not seem like a value addition in any way, although it is certainly an entertaining read.

This is such a cute book! It was a fairly quick and easy read that was quite enjoyable. It’s very well-written and surprisingly a bit suspenseful too. I was just dying to know what was to become of Cuddles the poodle from the very beginning! It was a really comical and fun read. It was even a bit educational too with some good pet care advice spread throughout the book. It’s written by a veterinarian so it is all real stories from his veterinary clinic which I thought was really cool and unique. Dr. Miller is a funny and well-versed guy who has really created a great little book. I really enjoyed it as an animal fanatic, but I’m sure it is an especially enjoyable book for actual vets and anyone else that works closely with animals. You get a really good look into the compassion that Dr. Miller and other animal-care professionals have for the animals in their care. I definitely recommend it for anyone that enjoys animals!

I love animals. This book gives you a look into the world of what a vet really does and goes through every day. It was not at all what I expected. Some parts were downright hilarious, with stories about grumpy poodles, or the lady who had poodle-print clothes; others were touching and sad. You could feel how much Dr. Miller loves animals but also has a compassionate touch to the animal's owners. I read the book in one sitting, and really enjoyed the way it flowed, there was no lull or word fluff to overcompensate. I loved the tips and suggestions the Dr. offers so that people in real life can provide the best care for their own pets. It is half educational and half fun reading. This really sets it apart from most books you read that are in this genre. If you have a beloved pet, or know someone who does, then this book would make a wonderful gift. I would also think it would make a wonderful gift for a student who will be working with animals, or even a pet shelter for its staff to read.

I really enjoyed the stories told by this vet. His stories about getting into vet school and not fitting in made him a likable character. My biggest complaint was the poor editing. It appeared there were words missing at times, causing me to reread a sentence to make sense of it. Though it might be his style, the storytelling seemed choppy. I enjoyed the case stories, as I do love animals.

I found Cute Poodles, Sweet Old Ladies and Hugs: Veterinary Tales by PJ Miller a sensible, extraordinary read. This book is all about a veterinarian’s tale, narrating his everyday life at the clinic while working with pets and customers. When I was a child, I had this tiny vision of myself working as a veterinarian but when I grew up I ended up not pursuing this profession because I thought it would be extremely challenging.In this book, I found that this profession really is challenging. Dr. P. J. Miller, the author of this book, proved it. But then again, despite the challenges in his profession, he also pointed out that being a veterinarian is fun and fulfilling. I loved how he described his passion with his work and with animals. It takes a bit of a dedication to being able to feel that way! I admired this book, as a whole. I found it sensible and full of depth. Everyone who aspires to become a veterinarian should check this book out!
