We raised three boys and this book (along with the bible) gives insights as to how boys should be taught so they will become the young men they need to be...yes, even in this day and age!!!

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Rick Johnson is the founder of Better Dads, a fathering skills program designed to equip men to be more engaged in the lives of their children and he writes from the experience of a less-than-adequate father turned "super dad" following his conversion to Christ. Johnson shares his own failings, fears and weaknesses as a challenge to other dads to encourage them that they, too, can and should be more diligent about their fathering. The book is full of practical advice mixed with godly wisdom and would make a great gift to any father young or old, especially for that dad who feels overwhelmed or under-equipped for the task of spiritually leading his family.Johnson addresses pretty much all areas of concern for a man. He deals with the importance of fathers bonding with their children, especially the need for an older man to bond with a younger man - he argues that true manhood is something that is caught by being in the presence of men, not something that a woman can teach and definitely not something that the culture is promoting or endorsing. Johnson also deals with the issues of sex and the important role that the father plays in this issue as well as discipline. We study for new jobs, we study for the SAT's, we even study the manual on how to hook up our new surround sound, but doesn't raising a child with good character affect eternity in a much stronger sense? Since my ex wouldn't read it, I did (I'm the mom). I enjoyed it so much I purchased the mother's version, "That's My Son." My son is only 18 months right now, but I'm of the opinion that a little effort now will save me much headache and heartache in the future. Even if you are not a 'reader,' please make the effort.

I only wish I would've picked this one up sooner. I highly recommend this book to ANYONE who is about to become a father whether you are Christian or not. I can say that even though I didn't really consider myself a religious person prior to reading this book the teachings in this book will really force you to reflect on certain areas of your life.. And may even guide you to reconsider another look at your faith in order for you to become the best man you can be for your son.

So I’m a single mom and I bought this book because I’m a mother of boys. And I know that as a woman I have some big shoes to fill as a mother. But my boys father left us when they were young and now I have even bigger shoes to fill trying to be a father. And trust me the struggle is real. I’m hoping this book can help me understand the values I need to help them learn to be better men. So far I’m only a few chapters in and I love it.

Instead of trying to cover a sweeping area of the war it basically focuses on one family. This focus really brings the agony of the war down to a personal level.At the time of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 6, 1941, Pappy Gunn was the Philippines Airlines manager, living in Manilla with his family. Gunn was an ex-Navy pilot, one with significant skills. He was away from home on business when the Japanese attacked and his wife and children were captured and placed in an internment camp. Gunn spent the next three years trying to rescue them. His innovations during this time helped MacArthur's air force become a power in the Pacific.Indestructible is a World War II story you don't want to miss.

To win a war, especially a war of the magnitude of World War II, it takes soldiers who are absolutely driven to defeat the enemy, as well as tactics and innovative weapons which help those soldiers get the job done. To this end, he waged a maverick war on his own: stealing supplies at gunpoint, "acquiring" planes which were slated for other places and making modifications which weren't approved by a higher authority. Eventually he caught the eye a few like-minded individuals and began converting existing bombers into gunships which would devastate anything in their path. One of these individuals was General George Kenney, the new commander of the 5th Air Force. An innovator himself, he and Pappy were kindred spirits who worked in cooperation to make the 5th AF a more potent and feared fighting force. The fruits of their labors were on full display in early 1943 when a convoy of Japanese ships attempting to land reinforcements in New Guinea was annihilated by the new gunships which Pappy helped create. From then on, the Japanese remained firmly on the defensive and never gained the upper hand in the Southwest Pacific.But this book isn't just about Pappy and his battles against the Japanese. He was an extremely devoted, loving husband and family man to his wife and four children. Leaving them behind in Manila when the Japanese invaded caused him untold mental anguish and provided the maniacal drive to defeat the Japanese. His family ended up being held prisoner in Santo Tomas, a university in Manila which was converted into a prison. Lack of food, diseases, cruel Japanese guards and untrustworthy fellow inmates provided a never-ending stream of obstacles to survival for the Gunn family. While they didn't know what had happened to Pappy, they always held out hope he would arrive to rescue them.This book reads like a novel at times and some of the stories about Pappy's exploits are acknowledged as being unconfirmed, but that doesn't stop the flow of the narrative. I've read dozens of books on the 5th AF and the air combat over the Pacific, and I learned a few things from this book. A welcome addition to my library!

It is a love story, a story of deep courage and commitment to winning the war, a story of how man overcomes a bureaucracy, a story of innovation, and a story of how a Mother and her three children survive in a Japanese Detention Camp in Manila. It contains almost unbelievable episodes of daring, such as Pappy stealing American made aircraft given to the Dutch in the Indonesia. These aircraft were more modern than the ones the Army Air Force had, so he and his band of merry men stole some to fight the Japanese.
